Have you ever thought how a deaf communicates about his/her health issues with a Doctor??

"The water had burst, and I was due. I had to reach hospital in 30 minutes or less, but I didn’t know this, then." She wipes the tears. "I had never been to hospital neither was ever briefed on what to be done and not to." says Sushma (fictional name), a hearing impaired (HI) who lost her baby as she couldn't reach hospital on time.  "We HIs don't make often visits to hospitals or other public spaces. There is hardly anyone who can help us the way we should be. Sympathy is the only thing that welcomes us, and not the requested help." Sushma, signs for all the HI mothers. The sad story of a mother who lost her child due to lack of self-knowledge and unsensitized society. We at GiftAbled decided to take a step forward to reach hospitals to help HI mothers in healthy upbringing of a new generation. We intend to sensitize the hospital staff, in basic signs to help these mothers, which even being a course off the medical books, was welcomed with open minds.  Communication is the biggest challenge faced by the deaf community. Daily communication itself is a challenge with hearing individuals not knowing sign language and deaf being unable to communicate clearly even through written communication. In such a situation, nobody takes special interest in communicating health related issues/precautions and tips. The information which seems obvious for the hearing are unheard of for the deaf, literally. So they lack awareness on precautions, health checkups and knowledge of various diseases. When we did the Breast Cancer Awareness during Pinkathon, we realized that almost all female Hearing Impaired (HIs) had no clue about this life threatening disease and for the first time in their lives, they were being told of something like this.

Recently when we did Women Health Matters a session by a Gynecologist on Women health related topics at Bangalore, Koppal and Laxmeshwar and reached out to 157 Deaf girls and 40 deaf boys. In coming months we would want to to educate 500 deaf about various health issues and sensitize 10 hospitals across Karnataka... What best than starting a campaign about this most ignored topic, during Daan Utsav - Joy of Giving week in partnership with Namma Bengaluru Foundation... Your support to our little efforts towards health of people with disability is just a click away:

The proposed campaign will cover 10 hospitals and reach out with 500 deaf.
