Fundraise for a Cause with Milaap : the Best Crowdfunding | Milaap
2nd June 2021
Hi Everyone,

We hope this message finds each one of you in good health and we hope you are doing better and being strong in these tough times!

From the bottom of our heart, we thank each one of you who contributed in our fundraiser, last year. With your contribution, SGEA was able to progress to a great extent in restoring the island yet again. We indeed took a step forward in making livelihoods better for the islanders as well but a year later, cyclone Yaas has destroyed most of the progress and we are yet again almost at same place when Cyclone Aila struck the island in 2009.

We all know that the mighty Sundarbans, has been taking the worst hit of seasonal tropical cyclones for years and yet again this year YAAS was no different. The eastern islands have been devastated yet again by turbulent, saline waters of the Bay and thousands are stranded with no access to fresh water, shelter or food. The lands are flooded and there is acute shortage of drinking water and food.

Around 1500 families in Kumirmari (a remote island of the Delta) are left with nothing but despair, with no shelter or food. 80% of the island is underwater. Most of the embankment establishments on Pathor-Protima are gone with the tides, with families living on any dry patches accessible.

With the immediate fund of Rs. 30000 raised, basic rations and disinfectants have been sent in 1st batch to the Kumirmari island on 1st June 2021. They comprised of the following:
• Rice (400 kgs)
• Pulse (100 kgs)
• Soyabean (50 kgs)
• Potato (250 kgs)
• Bleaching Powder (75 kgs)

We are raising funds to assist SGEA this year as well in order to sustain as many lives as possible. The funds generated by your contribution will provide food to 1500 people in immediate need, ones who had no time to prepare for the storm before it hit, towards sustaining families who have been displaced by the cyclone and providing drinking water to places inaccessible without a boat.

We request you to please go through all the details on our new Fundraiser page and contribute as much as you want and share to your best capabilities! We are hoping for your support once more for the love of Delta which protects the city we live in.

Recent works done by SGEA:

Kulpi Block :
Due to Amphan, Kulpi and it's adjoined areas have been affected really badly. The families of these areas do not have proper shelter. They either live in mud houses or houses made of bamboos and asbestos. All these houses have been totally destroyed. The daily wage earners and their families currently have no source of income, due to no work.

SGEA has made some food arrangements for the 50 families, as well as arranged for some baby food for the small children and have also distributed sanitary napkins in the area.

Mandirbazar Block and Bankimnagar Gram Panchayat :
Families lost their only shelter they had due to amphan and considering that in mind, immediate help was provided by team SGEA.
SGEA distributed food to over 250 families and tarpaulins to 157 families, altogether across the mentioned places.
