Jayanta and his mother Jayanti were not available during the time for the interview, but Jayanta's father was. So I sat down to talk with him. He had not heard of Milaap before but know of Janakalyan (BJS - Milaap's partner). He said that the loan was used for private tuition fees, school fees and to buy educational materials without asking and added that the income they earn is used in household expenses and they are not able to save money for their children's education.Â
Jayanta's father works a farmer in his own field and as a labour in other's field also. He earns Rs 200 to 500 in a day. Apart from farming he works in a warehouse in Dhupguri market but the work is not there for the whole year. He started telling me that there is lot of problems in his house as there were 3 deaths in the family recently. His wife does not work and manages the house. She is a member of BJS from more than 4 years. They have 2 sons and one daughter.
Jayanta is in 8th class now. He has given his final exams now. His father says that he is neither too good nor too bad in studies. He also said that since they are uneducated they have to be dependent on what the teachers teach. He went tuition in 2 places during his 7th class and covered all the subjects. His school and tuition are nearby only. He studies 1-2 hours in a day by himself. He plays cricket and football apart form studies. His father desires him to study at least till 10th class and told me that during his time they used to live on 2 roti in a day and study and now they try to provide all they can to their children and still they don't perform up to the mark. On asking whether his son will receive a good job in future he said that there are no jobs in his area. Even more educated people are simply sitting and wasting their time. The situation is very bad.
He thanks the lenders for the loan and says that earlier Jayanta's used to study 2 tuition and now he is going to 3 places and they have been benefited with the loan.
