I met Avanti Devi, the patient, at her home in the Sakinaka chawls. The house was a small 1 room shanty where she lived with her husband and three sons. Her husband, 55-year-old Radheshyam Dubey, is a security staff with a private firm in Ghatkopar. Her eldest son is working and learning photography at a studio. The second son works as an accountant with a CA while the youngest is still studying. Avanti started experiencing pains in her abdomen some time back but didn’t look into it much and just kept popping painkillers. She had been using a local birth control which backfired. Apparently, a nerve in her uterus was getting damaged. One day it nearly broke apart, and she had to be rushed to the Vedanta Hospital in Thane. The cause was determined after multiple tests and an operation was the only way out. “The situation was so bad that I required 15 litrs of blood. I was kept in the ICU for 10 days, all of which I spent unconscious,” says Avanti. All in all, she was admitted to the hospital for 17 days. As of now, she has recovered and has gone back to her daily routine. It took some time for her to get back on her feet, but with her family by her side, the task was made easy. “If it had not been for the loan, we would have had to put this house as collateral and take a loan from a local moneylender,” admits Avanti. With her pains and problems out of the way she can go back to doing what she likes, i.e. taking care of her kids. She has high hopes for them and believes that they will be successful in whatever endeavour they chose.
