“Our baby boy is critical in the ICU now. He cannot breathe on his own – his body is covered in tubes. His eyes are yellow, and his skin is discoloured. He cannot even cry loudly to express his pain if he wants to. We can only look on helplessly as our child suffers.” - Diwakar Reddy, father, in tears.
3-year-old Yughandhar is in a critical condition in the ICU. His liver has completely failed, and his lungs are also on the verge of failing, due to a condition called ARDS. ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome) is like pneumonia, in which fluid builds up in the tiny, elastic air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs. The fluid keeps the lungs from filling with enough air, which means less oxygen reaches the bloodstream. As his kidneys are also affected, the child is even undergoing dialysis now.
Without prolonged hospitalization and an urgent liver transplant, little Yughandhar will not be able to survive for long. His parents are painfully aware of this and are scrambling for urgent funds to save their child.
This poor child has been unwell for more than 6 months now
Yughandhar was growing up normally in the loving embrace of his parents, when fate changed the course of his life forever. Around six months ago, he started getting recurrent fevers which would not break, no matter what his parents did. They took him to many doctors, but his fevers persisted. Then one day, his condition worsened as he suffered from a severe cold and breathing difficulty.“He had to be rushed to the hospital… he had almost collapsed from weakness and his inability to breathe. He was in the ICU for many days, and it was a miracle that he survived. We thought he would slowly come back to being his normal, healthy self soon. But look at him now… he is in a worse condition than before.” - Hassani, mother.
‘I cannot afford food anymore, how will I afford his transplant?’
Yughandhar’s family is poor. His father, Diwakar, is a daily wager who earns only INR 300 per day – that too when work is available. Ever since Yugandhar started falling sick regularly, Diwakar has also not been able to go to work regularly. This in turn, has been affecting the family income. Diwakar had to beg and borrow money to treat his son thus far and cannot afford his life-saving liver transplant.“These past few months have been rough. With a sick child who had to get admitted in the hospital frequently, I was not able to even put food on the table many a time. My family has been going through hell, but all we want is for our younger child Yughandhar to be alright. We are ready to go through any hardship for him…but money is completely out of our reach. Please help us save him. Without the transplant, he will not be able to survive for very long.”- Diwakar Reddy.
