For any twenty-four-year-old girl, life must be all about having fun and fulfilling all the crazy childhood dreams. But not for Vidha, who at this tender age is all set to put everything at stake and has decided to make one of the biggest sacrifices of her life, by donating part of her liver to bring her father back to health from the clutch of death.
It all started two years ago when he had sudden tremors and sometimes his speech was slurred
“It was not easy for me and my mother. To be with my father, my mother has given up everything, including our fully established business. And with me being in a different city for my job, she is single handedly taking care of my father.” – Vidha.
What was then revealed came as a complete shock to us
Vidha and her mother were completely taken aback with the sudden change in Vidhi’s behaviour. Time to time Vidhi had sudden tremors and sometimes his speech was slurred. There was an unexpected change in behaviour which was difficult to interpret. For example, during one of those days Vidhi was trying to make a call with TV remote, and once he was trying to open a lock with a spoon.
His altered behaviour was a symptom of Hepatic Encephalopathy
“Initially me and my mother were not understanding what was happening with my father. For a moment he was fine, but he was behaving weird the very next moment. We took him to hospital where the doctor did some tests. What was then revealed came as a complete shock to us, that his altered behaviour is a symptom of Hepatic Encephalopathy, an advanced liver dysfunction resulting from the accumulation of neurotoxic substances in the brain.”- Vidha.
But the mother-daughter duo did put a tough fight against adversities until last September when his condition further deteriorated
With Vidhi’s health condition deteriorating, the family’s financial situation was also dwindling. With no one to take care of the business, the family’s source of income also came to a standstill. But, in spite of everything Vidha and her mother did not give up on hope. To keep up with the expense of Vidhi’s treatment, slowly and gradually they had to sell off their belongings and even had to borrow money from close relatives.
The only way to save his life is through Liver Transplant but it is beyond their means
“Come what may, me and my mother have decided not to stop. And how can we not, my father is the most important person in our life. We have spent almost 1 to 1.5 crores in his treatment. But last September his attack was severe. He was in a partial state of coma and was in hospital for more than twenty days. That was when the doctor had said, the only way to save his life is through Liver Transplant.” – Vidha
His daughter has decided to donate a part of her liver but it is the high cost of transplant that is holding them back.
Although the family is still fighting with all their might, along with the daughter deciding to donate part of her liver, despite being a risky prospective for her as well as her father as their blood groups do not match, it is the high cost of transplant that is holding them back.
“So far it is only hope that is keeping me and my mother going, to keep my father alive. Everyday is becoming tougher than yesterday. The doctor has suggested against getting the transplant done from Lucknow our hometown, and has recommended Delhi NCR which is again an expensive option. With nothing left with us, I don’t know how we are going to manage another 35 Lakhs for Transplant. I request everyone to help me to save my father” – Vidha with teary eyes.
