Venkata Rajesh’s mother abandoned him when he was just 2 years old. She left her infant and her husband in pursuit of better prospects for herself. Ever since then, the 12-year-old’s father Gurushekar, and his grandmother have been raising him on their own.
This family was somehow living from day to day, adjusting to their new realities and coping, when Venkata Rajesh was diagnosed with thalassemia major. Thalassemia major is a rare blood disease which causes the underproduction of hemoglobin in the body. The only real cure for this condition is a bone marrow transplant, which the child needs to undergo soon, or he may suffer from many complications – possibly even death.
‘Every 20 days, he needs new blood or else he collapses’
Ever since he was found to be suffering from this disease two years ago, little Venkata Rajesh has been living in fear. He shivers from head to toe when he visits the hospital for his blood transfusions. He hates how the needles have to pierce him for his own good. He does not eat or drink well every 20 days, whenever he receives new blood.“We cannot cause any delay in taking him to the hospital as we know what will happen otherwise. His body will collapse and shut down. He already becomes pale and weak, unable to walk or communicate his pain. We cannot watch him suffer like this…it is heartbreaking.” - Gurushekar.
This father is unable to save his only child on his own
Gurushekar is still pained by his wife leaving him years ago. He cannot understand what he and his child did wrong for her to take such a drastic decision that changed all their lives forever. But instead of focusing on his own troubles, he stepped up to take care of his child and made sure that Venkata Rajesh was always cared for.But as fate would have it, his little boy got sick with a disease that could turn deadly, and this father is worried that he may not be able to save him in time because of a lack of funds.
“I am just an ordinary mechanic. I don’t make enough money, but I made sure to give my son the best life I could give on my earnings. Now I stand to lose him as I’ll never be able to arrange the lakhs of rupees, he needs to undergo his lifesaving transplant. If you could help me, I will be forever grateful. If I lose my son also, I’ll have nobody to live for.”- Gurushekar.
