Arti and Manish's son was just born when he contracted jaundice. Almost two years later, he still needs to undergo intensive medical treatments because he is still waiting for the actual cure - a liver transplantation surgery.
"At just 20 days old, I noticed his eyes had a yellow tinge. The local doctor assured me that his jaundice would clear out on its own but all in vain. Instead, his jaundice led to severe infections one after the other and he had to be rushed to the hospital emergency every now and then. Arti's son had no complications during birth and was doing absolutely fine for the first two weeks. Trouble began when his bowel movements became irregular and his skin appeared visibly yellow. Manish fears his income from auto rickshaw will never be enough for his son's transplant
Arti and Manish are in their early twenties and being so young, they have hardly built a pool of savings that would be enough to get them this surgery costing INR 19.5 lakhs. Even after spending whatever savings they had, they still had to take up loans. Manish drives an auto rickshaw for a living but has never been able to earn more than INR 350 a day.
His scarred liver can only be cured with a transplant now
"We were already burdened with the medical costs and now, the living costs here have left us with no reasons to hold onto hopes of seeing our child recover. My son needs weeks of hospital care to be stabilised and that takes away the entire chunk of money whenever we try to save for his transplant. Arti is a matching donor for her son and the only reason she is still unable to save him is because she can't foot the bills. It is harmful for their child to stay with a damaged liver for so long and all they pray for is this transplant to happen soon.
