For 24-year-old Shirisha Manasani, life took an unexpected turn during what should have been the happiest time of her life. Married to Raju in April 2022, the couple eagerly awaited the arrival of their first child. However, the joy turned into a struggle when, in the 5th month of pregnancy, Shirisha began experiencing difficulty breathing.
She delivered her baby hooked to oxygen cylinders
Diagnosed with weak lungs, Shirisha's condition worsened as her pregnancy progressed. With each passing day, the need for oxygen support became more critical. She faced the unimaginable challenge of delivering her baby while on 24-hour oxygen support. The joy of welcoming their daughter was tempered as they got to know that Shirisha's lungs were damaged beyond repair.“Shirisha's health continues to get worse. Every breath has become a battle, and even simple tasks like walking and going to the washroom leaves her gasping for air. We had to send our daughter with her grandparents to the village and it’s been months since either of us has spent time with her properly, especially Shirisha. Shirisha needs life-saving lung transplant to survive
Raju, an audit executive at Bajaj, earns a modest 10,000 rupees per month while both Shirisha and Raju's parents are daily wage agricultural labourers. Selling assets and borrowing money sustained them temporarily but the cost of transplant is beyond their means.“For months she was on oxygen support and we kept borrowing money for that. But hearing the transplant cost, we lost all hope. It was the doctors and the people of our village who gave us strength to keep going. People in our village came together, collecting 2 lakh rupees for Shirisha's initial treatment. But it’s far from what we need. We need 35 lakh rupees for the crucial lung transplant.” - Raju
