A 8-year-old girl in my slums was raped by 4 filthy men. Her condition was so critical that doctors had to stitch her vagina to save her. It breaks my heart when I listen to stories like these. I’ve spent my whole childhood in these slums. I know the pain and fear of these girls who live here - Chandni Di, Founder, Voice of Slum
Born in a slum, Chandni or Chandni Di as she is lovingly called, went through the worst of what slum life had to offer in her childhood. But she did not let circumstances dictate the rest of her life.
From performing in street dance shows with her father to ragpicking, selling corn and even getting arrested on false counts of stealing, she had seen it all
Chandni Is Rescuing Young Girls From The Clutches Of Filthy Men Who Gang Rape Them Daily
“After the sudden demise of my father. The responsibility of running the household fell on my shoulders. I was wondering what to do with life when I got lucky and met a few NGO volunteers who were educating children from the slums. It was then I discovered my purpose - making life better for slum kids, no matter what it took.” - ChandniChandni, having promoted education for slum children and reported on slum issues, founded Voice of Slum (VoS) in Noida in 2015 with Dev Pratap Singh who had faced similar challenges in life like her. After running away from home at the age of 11 and staying at railway stations to working as a ragpicker, waiter and a territory sales manager at a reputed organization, Dev finally left it all to serve young slum kids.
Challenges Faced By Slum Kids
1. Extreme Living Conditions: Many children often reside amidst garbage, facing unsanitary and hazardous environments for prolonged periods.
2. Malnutrition and Health Issues: Limited access to nutritious food results in malnutrition, and the absence of proper healthcare exacerbates health problems.
3. Social Stigma and Begging : Abandoned by families, children experience social isolation and have to resort to begging.
4. Survival Measures: Desperate for sustenance, some beggars resort to unimaginable measures, such as consuming drugs to feel sleepy and eating trash.
5. Lack of Shelter: Many children lack adequate shelter, exposing them to harsh weather conditions and compromising their overall well-being.
6. Subjected to crime: Children become a prey to crimes like rape, smuggling, forced begging and brutality.
