His Family Sacrificed Everything To Get Him A Better Future, But Today He Is Bedridden Due To Kidney Failure

Sivanandham, a young man in his early-thirties from a small village in Tamil Nadu, had dreams of a brighter future. Though they were poor, his parents and his two elder brothers had done everything in their capacity to educate him despite being uneducated and illiterate themselves. Sivanandham was their hope, their beacon of hope for a better life.

However, fate had other plans for Sivanandham. Six years ago, while he was in college, his life took a tragic turn. It started with pain in his legs and a persistent feeling of weakness.
As time passed, these symptoms grew worse, and his legs became swollen and agonising. Sivanandham's life began to crumble as he could no longer stand for long periods or even perform basic daily activities. Little did he know then that his kidneys had begun to fail, and that he would need a kidney transplant in the future.

‘I try to beat this disease…but it is defeating me every day’

Despite his deteriorating health, Sivanandham showed remarkable determination. He successfully completed his OT (operation theatre) technician course, hoping to secure a stable job that could help his struggling family. But the chronic kidney disease that had gripped him was relentless. His kidneys had failed, and he required dialysis three times a week, along with a continuous supply of expensive medication.

“My life is going nowhere now. I see my old parents worrying about me, and I feel guilty. My elder brothers have to toil day and night in the fields to feed me, buy my medicines and take me to the hospital. I tried to overcome my disease and went to work for a couple of weeks after I completed my course. But I wasn't able to stand for long in the operation theatre and would collapse often. That’s how I had to abandon that and come back to my village.” - Sivanandham.

His life hangs in the balance now

Now, Sivanandham lay almost bedridden, unable to go anywhere, and devoid of energy. His mother, Dhanabakkiyam, cries herself to sleep every night, her heart breaking as she watches her son's suffering. The weight of their financial burden presses heavily upon them, threatening to crush their hopes for Sivanandham's survival. His father, Selvam, despite being almost 60 years of age, has decided to donate his kidney for the sake of his son's future, but the family cannot afford the INR 10 lakhs that is needed for his transplant.

"The weight of our family's financial struggle is crushing. My parents spent nearly 4 lakhs on my treatment, a sum that felt insurmountable for us. My elder brothers, who are daily wage labourers, sacrificed their own education to ensure I had a chance at a better future. They believed in my education as the key to breaking free from poverty. But now, I am nothing but a burden on my poor family." - Sivanandham
