An acid attack survivor, Rima Kumari's story is one of unimaginable pain and suffering. Her ordeal started when she was a little girl. After her father was allegedly poisoned by her uncle, her mother was left all by herself to take care of her siblings and her.
At the tender age of 13, she was forced into a marriage that became a nightmare of domestic abuse - all because her family could not afford paying the dowry demanded by her husband and in-laws.
Unspeakable suffering was all she had encountered in life
“At one point when I tried to run away, my husband beat me up so much that I ended up miscarrying my child. I wanted to run away and start a new life. I wanted to break free from the pain and the suffering… little did I know that something more horrific was going to happen to me.”- Rima Kumari.
She was finally able to set free from this abusive relationship and was back home. She even started trying to learn stitching and started a new job at a hospital. But her bliss did not last long…she was hunted down and subjected to further brutality by her husband and uncle. Their evil intentions led to a vicious attack that left Rima scarred for life, physically and emotionally.
Her hopes were shattered by the brutal attack
“One day, when I returned home from work, I was shocked to see that my uncle and my ex husband were waiting for me. My uncle put a cloth around my mouth and then threw me on the ground. They tried to strangle me. At this moment, I thought I was going to die. I remembered that my uncle had warned me sometime back, saying that he wouldn't kill me, but he would make my life such hell that I would never be able to do anything. That’s exactly what he did.” - Rima
Rima wanted to study further, and was preparing for her exams when this attack happened. On 25th January 2018, Rima suffered 80% burns after her attackers threw acid on her. She was 20 years old. After throwing acid on her face, the attackers also cut her right thumb - so that she would lose her capability to study or do anything even if she were to survive.
A story of renewed hope
But even in the face of such horror, Rima clung to hope. She underwent a groundbreaking surgery to rebuild her scalp tissue, a ray of light that promised a chance at a better future. The first stage of her treatment was successful, but now she faces the crucial second stage, scheduled for June 2023. However, the financial burden threatens to derail her journey to recovery.Rima humbly appeals to the community for support.
