Auto Driver Struggles To Save 60% Handicapped Wife From Deadly Lung Infection

“My wife Rajeshwari and I have been happily married for 15 years. We never had children, but our life always felt complete—with just the two of us. But now, she’s lying in bed unable to speak, unable to eat, unable to breathe fully on her own. I’m an auto driver. I’ve taken loans, spent our savings, borrowed from everyone I could. But I don’t have the money left to continue her treatment. If I lose her, I will have no one to live for.—Prasad, husband

Rajeshwari, 45, is fighting to stay alive after a series of life-threatening complications. Her health troubles began just a month ago with what seemed like a common fever. But within 24 hours, her condition worsened drastically—she had seizures, began speaking in a confused way, and then collapsed into unconsciousness. She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered that a severe infection had spread to her lungs.

She suffered a cardiac arrest… was revived, but now breathes through a tube

In the ICU, Rajeshwari was placed on a ventilator. Her condition remained critical, and soon after admission, she went into cardiac arrest. Doctors managed to revive her, but she remained on the ventilator for eight days. To protect her airway and support her recovery, doctors performed a tracheostomy—a procedure that creates an opening in the neck to insert a breathing tube. Rajeshwari has long struggled with a disability that affected her mobility; she was 60% handicapped. She cannot walk or perform everyday tasks at the same pace as others. The recent medical crisis has left her even more dependent, and she now requires 24/7 care.

“The doctors saved her life. But the infection in her lungs is still there. She can’t talk anymore because of the tube. She can’t eat normal food either. She needs support for everything—even sitting up, even breathing. Earlier, she used to at least move around the house slowly. Now, I have to help her sit up, feed her, clean her… She’s completely bedridden. But she’s alive, and I still believe she can recover with time and proper treatment.—Prasad

‘We have spent lakhs by borrowing, and have nothing left for further treatment’

The family has already spent around ₹4 lakhs on Rajeshwari’s treatment—using every bit of savings and taking loans from relatives and lenders. But the fight is far from over. Her lung infection persists, and the costs of continued hospital care, antibiotics, respiratory support, and nutritional needs are mounting daily. Her brother, who works in housekeeping, tries to support where he can. But it’s not enough. Her husband, who continues to drive his auto whenever possible, is now mentally and financially drained.

“I’ve done everything I can. But now I’m watching helplessly as she suffers. I just want her to get better, to speak again, to smile again. I don’t know how to save her anymore… not without help.”—Prasad
