“My Priyanka used to manage the tea stall pretty much on her own, and I would just do the small things. She never let me take over; she insisted that she do everything on her own. Now that she is ill, and I am having to do everything on my own, I understand how much my Priyanka used to do in a day. She was the wind beneath my wings. Now seeing her in this condition makes it difficult to keep living life normally.”- Praful Besurkar, husband.
Priyanka used to be an early riser who managed everything single-handedly at home - including housework and the care of her daughter before leaving to make tea at the tea stall that is her family’s only source of income, with her husband. Today, confined to a bed, she despises the life that has stripped away her energy. What is worse is her elderly father passed away hearing about the severity of her condition, from an unexpected heart attack. Priyanka fears she may be the next to go, and this doesn't let her be at peace.
Their family, once brimming with laughter and joy, is now submerged in the silence of hospital corridors. Medicines clutter their home, replacing the comforting scent of tea leaves. Priyanka, at the young age of 30, battles chronic kidney disease.
‘She was paralysed for a whole month because of her illness; we thought we had lost her’
Priyanka’s struggle started with a constant stomach ache that got worse every day. Scans showed one of her kidneys had shrunk. Medicines helped a bit, but soon her condition became really tough. Now, she has to do dialysis three times a week, and it's not just taking a toll on her physical health but also on her mental health.“She is fighting for her life every day now. Recently she had a paralysis episode wherein she couldn't move her body for a month. We never thought she would recover. But prayers and specialised Ayurvedic massages have somehow brought her back on track. But she cannot even speak properly now; body movements are out of the question.”- Praful Besurkar.
Their five-year-old daughter fears to lose her mother
Priyanka’s condition is getting worse with every passing day. She is dependent on her elderly mother for even the most basic tasks. The weight of the situation rests heavily on her father, who, in his role as the lone breadwinner managing the tea stall on his own from dawn to dusk, struggles to keep the flame of hope alive.“If I can't arrange enough money, my child will lose her mother. Dialysis and medicines every month come up to INR 40,000 upwards. She will need to undergo this mode of treatment for the foreseeable future. I'm not able to manage this. I am not able to sleep well at night. Scary thoughts haunt me. I will not be able to live if something happens to her.”- Praful, tearfully. They need your help urgently before her condition worsens further.
