“Pihu’s liver transplant failed and she started developing life-threatening symptoms. Her fever was at an all-time high. She was weak and so unlike herself. We thought we were going to lose her. We had to get her another transplant at any cost, despite having no money left”- Bhawna Singh, mother.

Pihu then had to be re-admitted in the hospital where she is undergoing another life-saving surgery while this story is being written. Bhawana and Vikram pleaded with the doctors to get her in for another transplant, despite knowing that they would not be able to afford it. They knew it was a life or death situation.

This mother gave her daughter a piece of her own liver
When Pihu was born, she was a little yellowish in appearance. When Bhawana alerted the doctors about this, she was told that her bilirubin levels were high. Further tests and diagnostics revealed that she had a liver condition that could cause further deterioration in the future. And last year, it got progressively worse and her doctors scheduled for an urgent liver transplant. Bhawna volunteered to give her daughter a piece of her own liver, after tests revealed that she was a donor match.“I was ready to give even my life for my daughter, a piece of my liver is nothing. I just wanted her to be alright. She is such a bright and intelligent girl – people never believed when we told them she was suffering from a liver disease all her life.”- Bhawna, tearfully.

They have not been able to pay fully for the first surgery itself
Bhawna and Vikram are a middle-class couple who had to work very hard to have a normal life and upbringing for their only daughter. Bhawna had to quit her job after the birth of their daughter, due to the latter’s illness. Vikram works as a clerk in a hospital and was the sole breadwinner of the family. They sold everything they had and yet, they have not been able to pay in full for Pihu’s first liver transplant. The second one is completely beyond their reach.
“We are already in massive debt. We have an outstanding bill of 7 lakhs already from the first transplant. We are completely helpless.” – Vikram, Pihu’s father.
