Widowed Mother Is Single-Handedly Struggling To Save Daughter From Deadly Blood Disease

“Amma If I die, will I go and meet nanna?”,  Pavani asked her mother Siromani, when she learned that she has a deadly blood disease, that is killing the blood cells in her body.

Siromani, who lost her husband in 2013 to severe jaundice, is unable to hold back tears every time the thought of losing her daughter comes to her mind. She has no way to afford the bone marrow transplant that can save Pavani's life.

She was entirely panic-struck when her daughter's fever wouldn't subside

4 months ago, Pavani started having recurring fevers, despite taking medicines at a local doctor’s consultation. Her mother took Pavani to a bigger hospital, hoping to avail better treatment there. But to her shock, the doctors informed Siromani that her daughter suffers from severe pancytopenia, a deadly blood disease due to which Pavani’s body is unable to produce new blood cells.

“Of my two daughters, Pavani is the most active one. She loves playing with her friends and she would be the first one to greet and welcome guests, when they came by our home. Everyone loved her. But now, she has known nothing but pain for the past 3 months. We had to shave her hair, which she used to be very fond of, because of how prone she was to getting infections. Now she doesn't even want to look at herself. I feel guilty for making her go through all of this.” - Siromani, mother

Pavani then and now

With timely blood transfusions, Siromani was able to keep her daughter alive so far. But now even the transfusions are of no comfort to Pavani. She is struggling to breathe on her own and is currently on oxygen support. She needs immediate bone marrow transplant to recover from this condition.

With a meagre income and no home to live in, Siromani is struggling to afford the transplant for her daughter

“Her friends call her every day and ask her when she will come home. She tries to avoid the questions and remains silent. She knows she doesn’t have much time and I feel helpless for not being able to provide her any sort of comfort.” - Siromani, mother

Siromani is a primary school teacher with a meagre income of INR 4,000 per month in Proddatur, Andhra Pradesh. She has mortgaged her house and sought help from her relatives through which she has managed her daughters blood transfusions, incurring a total of INR 6 lakhs so far. With a huge debt on her shoulders, she has no way to arrange for INR 35 lakhs for the life-saving transplant that Pavani needs.

“If losing my husband wasn't enough, now I could lose my daughter too. My daughter is all I have now. Even a single rupee that you can spare, will save my daughter. This is my only chance. Please help me” - Siromani, mother
