Terrible Blood Infection Has Gripped 5-Month-Old's Lungs, But His Parents Are Struggling To Keep Him In NICU

A terrible blood infection has put 5-month old Jai Swaran on ventilator support. His parents are desperately waiting for their son to come back to his senses, but the situation is extremely grim.

"If we are fortunate enough to still see our son alive, it is only because our local doctor booked an ambulance and helped my son get ventilatory support urgently. Otherwise we could have never been able to afford the ambulance for such a long distance from our village. His coughing had worsened over a span of days but when we saw traces of blood in it, we were terrified." - Shekhar, father

This little boy is fighting a terrible lung and blood infection altogether

Baby Jai was born with an undeveloped windpipe. The floppy walls of his windpipe are severely obstructing his breathing. But it was only when his lungs and blood got infected, that his condition aggravated to the point of life-support. He has been admitted in the NICU since September and still struggles for breath every now and then.

"He was drastically losing weight because he was unable to take in food due to the blocked pipes. They had to surgically insert a food tube in his stomach. His eyes were rolled up but he passed a smile for a faint second. That smile is the only reason why my hopes are alive now. When my baby is fighting so hard to return to us despite such pain, then how can I give up?"- Mamta, mother

At just 5 months old, this baby is put on medicines to control his blood pressure

Whenever the doctors tried to take him off the ventilator, Jai's blood pressure started fluctuating alarmingly. His pneumonia hasn't still come under control, causing septic shocks to his tiny body.

"The doctors don't want his body to get used to life support so they tried taking him off it a couple of times but my son still needs it very much to survive. As soon as the oxygen mask is taken off, we can hear a hitch in his breathing. It is getting beyond our financial capacity to keep him in the NICU but my baby still needs to be constantly monitored. His condition is such, if we take our eyes off him for a second, we fear something tragic might happen." - Shekhar, father

These helpless parents stay in the hospital corridors on the generosity of the nurses

Being a bike mechanic, Shekhar is incompetent to arrange INR 10 lakhs all by himself. Currently, he is living in the hospital corridors with his wife, hoping today would be the day his son would wake up and respond to his parents' cries.

"We left overnight in the ambulance and couldn't manage to pack anything apart from the very basic necessities. We were not expecting our son's condition to turn so critical that months would pass by. Today, we are surviving solely on the mercy of the nurses and staff here, who share their meals with us or provide us with a vacant bed, whenever possible. I beg for help from you all to save my only child."- Shekhar, father
