Gaurav’s life had always been about table tennis. Ever since he was young, the sport had been his biggest passion. He wasn’t just good at it—he loved it. Soon, his hard work paid off when he became a coach at Tenvic Sports in Bangalore. Coaching young players, helping them grow, and pushing them toward success was everything he had ever wanted. He was proud of the life he had built, not just for himself, but for his family.
He Was Diagnosed With Lung Cancer
But then everything changed. What began as a simple dry cough turned into something much worse—a lymph node infection. After a few tests, doctors found water in his lungs. Then came the diagnosis: lung cancer. By the time the doctors discovered it, it was already too late. The cancer had spread, and surgery was no longer an option. The only way forward was chemotherapy, but even that came with no guarantees.
His Conditioned Only Became Worse As He Lived His Worst Nightmare
“I wanted to be a national coach,” Gaurav says softly, his voice barely a whisper now. “I wanted to make my family proud, give them a better life. And I was almost there too. But now, I don’t even know if I’ll get the chance to play again. I cried the whole time the day I was diagnosed.”
The treatments that followed drained him of both energy and hope. Eating became difficult, and some days, he could barely muster the strength to get out of bed. The emotional toll of watching his career slip away was as painful as the physical symptoms of his illness.
Immunotherapy Is Expensive But It IS Also his Only Chance
By May, his condition deteriorated further. The cancer had spread to the left side of his brain. His doctors informed him that chemotherapy alone wasn’t enough to combat the aggressive nature of his illness. His best chance of survival lay in immunotherapy, but the cost was staggering—₹25 lakhs. His family had already given up so much, but this seemed just impossible.
He Lost His Job And His Family Had To Bear The Financial Burden
Gaurav was painfully aware of the sacrifices his family was making for him. His brother became the sole breadwinner after Gaurav lost his job. His father, already too frail to work, spent his days in quiet worry, pacing the house. But it was his mother’s sacrifices that moved him the most. One day, he caught her retrieving money from a small box she kept hidden in the kitchen. It was her emergency fund, savings she had accumulated little by little over the years, now being used to pay for his medicine. Seeing her hands tremble as she counted the money broke Gaurav’s heart.
He Had Bigger Plans For The Future
"I was supposed to marry my fiancée in 2025," Gaurav says, his voice heavy with emotion. "We had been planning it for years, but now... now everything is on hold. But she’s still here, by my side, supporting me through all of this. Her strength, her love—it reminds me every day of what I’m fighting for. Not just for myself, but for the future we dreamed of together."
