Once A Pro-Active Primary School Teacher, Is Now Fighting A Battle Against Cancer

“Ever since I met her, I have always seen her as a very lively and strong woman. There is nothing in the world that she loves more than teaching and travelling. But right now, both of her dreams have been snatched away by cancer and she is confined in the four walls of this room. My heart aches as she often loses hope of things getting better but I refuse to believe that.”

- Swarup, husband

Happiness that couldn’t last long

Last year in June Debasree Poddar found strange swelling in her leg that was later diagnosed to be cancer. Once an active and cheerful primary school teacher, Debasree’s life took a 180 degree turn. She was immediately given 6 cycles of chemotherapy to kill the cancer cells.

“She fought cancer very bravely and all the signs suggested that things were getting better but when her check-up was done in January, Doctors told us that cancer has returned and in its worst form ever. It broke my wife completely. Every day she has to battle with herself- mentally and physically.”- Swarup, husband

Friends and Students pray for her recovery

“I have known Debasree for 14+ years. She is a dear friend and a very enthusiastic colleague. Her students miss her and the energy she fills the classroom with. Watching her in this state is really difficult for each one of us. We all are praying for her speedy recovery.” - Shovan Roy, friend & collegue

Debasree is surrounded by love and prayers. Her students, friends and family give her strength to fight. They remind her that life is worth fighting for and what awauts her when this battle is over. However, the real challenge that this family is facing is financial. They are struggling to afford the treatment she needs.

Together we can give this teacher a hope to keep fighting

Debasree now needs salvage chemotherapy follwed by an autologous stem cell transplant to survive. However, the family is struggling to afford the treatment that will cost them 30 Lakh Rupees. Debasree has two children. Elder one is 22, aspiring to pursue higher education and her younger son just wrote his 10th standard exams. With all means exhausted in first round of treatment, Swarup is also at the verge of losing hope of arranging funds.

"Our family income is 80 thousand a month and like any other middle class family, we also got health insurance but it could only cover a few cycles of chemo. Though I give hope and streghth to my wife every day, I fail to stay positive myself given the crisis we are facing. I feel so helpless." -Swarup
