Abandoned By Her Father, 5-Year-Old Is Fighting Eye Cancer That Claimed Her Sight And Now Threatens Her Life

“Right after my daughter’s diagnosis, my husband turned into an alcoholic and believed that there was no point in saving our daughter. It’s been two years and he has barely visited home. But I never gave up on her, how can I?” - Rasool, mother

Rasool bi’s 5-year-old daughter suffers from Retinoblastoma, an eye cancer. She was diagnosed 2 years ago and ever since then, Rasool has left no stone unturned to save her little girl.

She has lost her sense of sight in both eyes due to cancer

It all began when Rasool noticed a tiny dot on her older daughter’s eye. What started as a dismissible concern turned into persistent swelling, forcing Rasool Bi to travel from one city to another in a desperate search for a cure.

“In the last 2 years, I have been to Tirupathi, Guntur, Hyderabad, and Vijayawada just to hear the bitter truth that this cancer had stolen my child’s eyesight. They say her eyesight can only be cured with an eye transplant in the future but before that can even happen, I need to save her from cancer first. She needs immediate chemotherapy.” - Rasool

With two daughters to care for, she's battling against time to save her older child

Rasool is a single mother to two daughters, her youngest daughter being just 3 years old. Not one to give up, she spends 4 hours in a local bus just to travel to the hospital for her older daughter's treatment. Her stubbornness to save her daughter at all costs has brought her this far but she is struggling to get the urgent chemotherapy that this little one needs to survive.

“I tie a scarf on her face, to safegaurd the bulging eye from any infections. I cannot afford to take her in a private vehicle and hence take a public bus. Both of them are way to young to understand anything that’s going on. When I ask my elder daughter if she is able to sense anything in front of her, she often says she can but when I put my fingers right in front of her eyes, she doesn’t even blink. I wish everything could go back to normal, my daughters are my everything.” - Rasool

Debt-ridden and all alone, she's been providing for her family with borrowed money

Her husband, once a pillar of support, crumbled under the weight of hopelessness, turning to alcohol for solace. The man who once held their family together became absent, emotionally and financially. For two long years, Rasool Bi has been treating and feeding her children on borrowed money.

Her family, both in-laws and parents, are poor themselves, and though they have been doing their best, it isn’t enough for this child’s treatment. Rasool prepares garlands and earns Rs 30 per kg and that’s all she gets. She has been battling to save her child alone.
