She Loves Her Sister, But Wants To Live Before Meeting In Heaven

Our daughter is simply brilliant. She speaks fluent English and knows a lot about the world – when people come to know of her family’s poor financial background, they are pleasantly surprised. She wants to become a doctor and we have high hopes pinned on her and her future. We want her to have a life that is far better than the one we are currently living. We have already lost a child to this cruel disease…we cannot lose yet another.” - Bharathi, mother.

As a baby, Trimurthulu and Bharathi’s daughter was diagnosed with thalassemia major, a rare blood disorder which causes the underproduction of haemoglobin in the body. She has been undergoing frequent blood transfusions to survive, and used to live a relatively normal life as a result until now – now her condition has worsened. The 13-year-old has not gone to school in many days and this hurts her more than any physical pain that she is suffering.

She has to be brought to the hospital in a wheelchair now

This poor child has become so weak now that she needs to be brought to the hospital every 10 days for blood transfusions. She cannot even walk like normal anymore; she has to use a wheelchair. She cannot eat or rest properly due to her worsening condition. Doctors have told her parents that her vital organs could also be severely damaged in the long run due to over-deposition of iron from the transfusions, that could kill her in the process.

But all hope is not lost. This child can still have a bright future if she gets an urgent bone marrow transplant. However, the procedure costs lakhs of rupees that her parents cannot even dream of making in their lifetime.

“When we see her, we are reminded of the fate of our first-born who died as a result of the same condition. The pain that we endured…we do not wish that on anyone else. We are ready to give our lives for the sake of our child. We are trying our best to make sure that she survives, but money is the major obstacle in this fight of ours.” - Bharathi

‘I am looking for work so that I can feed her at least…but have been unsuccessful so far’

When Bharathi and Trimurthulu were told that their only surviving child would need an urgent bone marrow transplant, they took her to a super-speciality hospital in Chennai from their hometown in Visakhapatnam. They had to sell everything they possessed and accumulate whatever little savings they had, in order to do this. But now, they have completely run out of money and are struggling to feed their child, let alone afford her medical treatment.

“I used to earn almost INR 10,000 per month as a daily wager back home, but now I am jobless. I do not regret leaving my job behind for the sake of my daughter, but how will I take care of her and save her without money? I cannot leave my wife and child behind and go back home looking for work. I am trying to find work in Chennai, but nothing has worked out. We are mentally and financially drained.”- Trimurthulu, father
