They say ‘patience is virtue’ and they also say, ‘a sincere wait yields result’. But something went wrong with these sayings for Saraswati and Dhanraj Tiwari from Surat, Gujarat, who after a long wait of seven years, have given birth to twins, only to long to touch them and hold them in their arms, as the babies are extremely preterm, and are fighting to be alive in a hospital NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit).
“All these seven years I was praying to become a parent. Now, looking at the condition of my babies, I feel like, it would have been better if God would not have blessed me, and put my little ones through so much of hardships.” - Dhanraj Tiwari, Father.
We spent all our earnings to become parents
Dhanraj and Saraswati have been married for seven years. Although in adversities and crisis, they were still content with whatever they had, except for one thing, they were not able to become parents.
Narrating the days Saraswati Tiwari, the mother, says, “We tried and tried every possible ways. We went to end number of doctors, took end number of medicines, and spent all our earnings to become parents. But nothing had worked for us.”
My happiness doubled when I came to know we were expecting twins
And it was after seven long years of patience and wait, that their prayers were finally answered, when one fine day after a detailed medical test, the doctor declared that Saraswati was pregnant.
Saraswati further adds, “My happiness knew no bound, and it only doubled, when we came to know that we were expecting twins. I felt after all, God had listened to us after so much of prayers”.
We were not able to understand how suddenly things went wrong
But for Dhanraj and Saraswati, their joy of parenthood turned out to be momentary, as just after completing her second trimester, the doctor after examining Saraswati, declared that the babies would be at risk if they stayed in mother’s womb for long, and thus Saraswati needed to go to labour urgently.
Dhanraj laments, “It was a huge shock to us. We were not at all prepared for it. Everything was going so well. We were not able to understand how suddenly things went wrong, irrespective of taking so much of precautions”.
Please help us to keep my children alive
With doctor’s instruction, Saraswati went to labour immediately, and two weeks back, she gave birth to a son and a daughter. But, because of being extremely preterm, the babies’ conditions are very critical, and everyday Dhanraj and Saraswati have to deposit thirty-five thousand to forty thousand to keep the babies alive.
While crying inconsolably, Saraswati says, “My small babies are not able to have milk properly. The little ones are not even able to breathe. The doctor has said, I have to keep my children in NICU for two more months, which will cost more than 10 lakhs. My husband is just a security guard in a housing complex and I work as a household help. We are struggling with all our might to arrange for the hospital expense for a single day. How can we continue for two months. Please help us to keep my children alive. Please don’t let them die.”
