Baby Born With Severe Heart Defect Needs Prolonged Treatment To Recover, You Can Help Her

“I wasn't yet due according to the dates given to us, but my water broke and I was taken into emergency for early delivery. Before I could even see my little baby properly, she was taken into the ICU, as she had trouble breathing. I was told that it was just for a few days but the next thing I know, we were rushing her to a bigger hospital in an ambulance.” - Dipika, mother

The newborn needed open-heart surgery to survive

Dipika and Jay’s newborn baby girl was diagnosed with a heart condition - pulmonary atresia, a birth defect where the valve that controls blood flow from the heart to the lungs doesn't form at all. In babies with this defect, blood is unable to flow to the lungs to pick up oxygen for the body. The baby needed immediate open-heart surgery to correct the defect. Her parents approached all the hospitals referred to them in Nagpur, but no one was ready to operate on the newborn.

“By God’s grace, we found obe hospital that was ready to operate on our baby but it was in Hyderabad. It was a long journey, and every minute felt so long as I watched my baby gasp for breath even with the ventilator. I was so terrified of losing her that I couldn’t stop crying.” - Jay

She underwent 6 hours of major surgery

“The surgery took 6 hours and I can’t tell you how restless and tensed I was. The thought of a knife piercing my child’s body, that too her heart, was killing me and I just couldn’t wait to see her again. She is barely a few days old and look at what my baby has to go through. It breaks my heart to see her struggle like this and I am unable to do anything to ease her troubles.” - Dipika

Though the operation was successful, the baby needs prolonged treatment to recover. She is currently admitted in the ICU. Her lungs are still weak to breathe on her own and she is on mechanical ventilation.

Only you can help

"It’s been more than 20 days and we haven’t gone back home. My son, who is 6, often calls and asks us when we will be back and when he can see his sister, I don’t know what to say to him. My little girl is fighting with all her will and is recovering too, but I am unable to afford the treatment any further. I am failing to protect my child.” - Jay

Jay works at a rice mill and earns about INR 12,000 a month, an amount just enough for the family to get by. But now, his income is not even enough to bear the expense of one day’s treatment. He has exhausted all the money he could arrange and is helpless. But there is still hope, you can help this family.
