“I was running from one hospital to another holding him in my arms, calling him out, but he wasn’t responding and no hospital was taking him in, I... I never felt that scared in my life. I thought I will lose my child.”- Penchala, father
Poorya lives in a small village near Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. One day in the middle of the night, the 4 year old had high fever,he turned pale, his body started swelling up and he started having fits.
“The nearest hospital that we have is 50 kms away from us. We were on our way and Poorya, he just became unconscious. I was shivering with fear and I couldn’t think straight. The closer we got to the hospital, the more scared I was. ”- Aruna, mother
“When we finally found a hospital, the doctors asked us to immediately take him to Chennai. They said there was no time to waste.”
Poorya suffers from Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a condition that affects the blood and blood vessels. It results in the destruction of blood platelets (cells involved in clotting), a low red blood cell count (anemia) and kidney failure.
If I can’t afford his treatment, his kidneys will fail
He needs intensive care and needs to constantly undergo plasmapheresis (plasma exchange) and dialysis to remove the toxic substances from his body. But Penchala has already put in all he had and is left with nothing.
“ I am a small town lecturer, I don’t get paid much. All I could arrange was 1 lakh, that too I borrowed from here and there. 7 lakhs more...I don’t know what I will do now.”
I never thought I would see him like this
“He was attached to all these tubes and machines. How could he get this sick? He was all fine a day before and now this. It took 3 days for him to regain consciousness and all these days I would constantly keep checking on him every now and then. I was terrified.”
Poorya is a very active child. Like any other 4-year-old, he keeps running around and loves to ride his cycle. He loves to watch cartoons. He goes to anganwadi and tells all that has happened to his parents. The parents are devastated to see their child suffering and are helpless.
Your small contribution can save this little child. Without your help he can't go back to his normal life. His kidneys are failing and you can help.
