After Being Abandoned By Husband, Single Mother Struggles To Save Son From Kidney Disease

“My son is fading in front of my eyes, and I feel completely powerless. Both his kidneys have failed. He can’t get up, can’t eat properly, can barely even speak. He just lies there, looking at the ceiling or at his books. I’ve been fighting this battle alone ever since my husband walked away from our lives ten years ago. I don't know where to go, whom to turn to; every day, I wake up praying for a miracle, and every night I sleep with the fear of losing him.”— Sunita Tiwari, mother

Aditya’s health struggles began unexpectedly in 2018, when he was a small boy. What seemed like a minor fever turned into relentless weakness. Tests revealed a shocking truth—he was born with a rare congenital kidney defect: one oversized kidney and one smaller, underdeveloped one both on one side of his body. The family, unaware of the condition, had always thought of him as a healthy child. Over time, his creatinine levels rose dangerously, forcing him into dialysis. Despite everything, he tried to keep up with schoolwork and life. But now, his condition has worsened to the point that a kidney transplant is the only way to save him.

He wanted to get into the medical field and take care of his family, but life had other plans

Aditya had always dreamt of becoming a medical professional—he wanted to heal people, and more importantly, take care of his mother and younger brother. Even while battling his illness, he was determined to complete his Intermediate exams. He studied with IV lines attached, squeezing in revision between hospital admissions and dialysis sessions. He passed the exams, but couldn’t sit for NEET—the one exam he had hoped to clear—because his condition worsened just before the date. His body is constantly bloated from fluid retention, and a thick canula runs through his neck for dialysis, which happens three times a week. The pain, both physical and emotional, has become a part of his everyday life.

“He doesn’t speak much anymore. Sometimes I find him staring blankly at his books—he doesn’t touch them, doesn’t read, just holds them like he’s holding on to a lost dream. His eyes are always tired. He doesn’t talk to me... and it breaks me. I feel like I’ve failed him as a mother. He’s slipping away, and I can’t stop it.— Sunita Tiwari

The financial burden has crushed the family; they cannot afford his transplant

With no help from the father, Sunita is the sole breadwinner, earning a meagre income through tailoring and small jobs in the village. Her younger son is still in school, and there’s barely enough to cover daily needs, let alone mounting medical bills. The people who once helped them stopped doing so after her father died. He was the only one they could depend on.

“I’ve sold every little thing we had—jewellery, utensils, even the small bits of furniture in our home. But it’s not even close to enough. There’s no one left to ask. I beg you, please help me save my son. He has so many dreams...and now they’re slipping away. just want to see him live, study, smile again. Please, help me bring him back to life."— Sunita Tiwari
