A liver transplant is the only way her woes will end
When she was just two, little Adhishree suffered from a liver disease called biliary atresia, in which one or many bile ducts are blocked or damaged. She had severe jaundice and fever for days, after which doctors advised that she undergo a procedure called Kasai. She underwent the surgery, and it was successful to an extent. But her recurrent infections almost every year were a reminder of the poor state of her liver.“She would also get frequent nose bleeds. We thought that medicines would be enough to make her better. But we were wrong. Last month, she had to be brought to a Bengaluru hospital from Hubli, where we reside, as things got out of hand. Doctors are saying that without the transplant, she would not be able to survive for long.” - Prashant Shetty, father.
‘We did everything middle-class parents can afford to do…but it is not enough’
Adhishree’s father, Prashant, works in a private company and he is the only breadwinner of the family. Ever since her diagnosis at birth, he has been spending more than he can afford on her treatment and hospitalization. Prashant and Savita even decided not to have another child as they did not want to compromise on Adhishree’s quality of life. They wanted to focus on her well-being and get her cured. However, the liver transplant that can end their daughter’s suffering is completely beyond their reach.
“We are a normal middle-class family. We have made ample sacrifices for our child. We are ready to do more, but financially we are completely drained. We have sold whatever possessions we had, we have borrowed a lot of money and are in debt… but it is not enough. Please help us save our child. She is all we have.” - Prashant, tearfully.
