India is far behind in organ donation and there are various reasons for this including lack of funding access, education, awareness, misconceptions, superstitions, consent from family and shortfall of organ transplantation centres, said Anoj Vishwanathan, president and co-founder, Milaap. The rate of organ donation in India is only 0.26 per cent per million. There are only about 301 hospitals in the country for organ transplantation, while an estimated 43 lakh people need transplants in one form or the other.
