Each day, lakhs of Mumbai’s residents have to consistently struggle to secure their minimum requirement of water. While for many, the Municipal Corporation supplied water flowing through their taps is taken for granted, many urban poor and working class residents of Mumbai have to depend on various ‘informal’ sources to secure minimum water at a prohibitive cost, just so they may live
Over the last ten years, Pani Haq Samiti has worked to make affordable, treated municipal water accessible to all residents of Mumbai. For instance, in 2012, we filed a public interest litigation arguing that water should be provided as a right to all urban residents. In 2014, the High Court at Mumbai agreed, stating that water is a human right and thus, is the responsibility of the municipal government to provide water to all.
To ensure the implementation of this order, since January 2017, Pani Haq Samiti has been actively monitoring and facilitating the implementation process of distributing official city water at municipal costs across the urban poor settlements of Mumbai.
We assembled team of community organizers and activists have been facilitating and assisting communities across 17 administrative wards of Mumbai in applying for water connections. Through a consistent dialogue with the municipal authorities and a strong presence among the communities, Pani Haq Samiti has been able to submit 5000 forms for water connection out of which 50 households have started getting municipal water. We have accomplished some successes, many successes are on the horizon.
To sustain and strengthen Pani Haq Samiti’s work into the future, we now need your help. We request all the conscious citizens of Mumbai to come forth and donate; to bring water, life’s most essential resource and basic need, to people’s homes. The financial support provided by you will help in sustaining years of work of a group of dedicated individuals and in turn will help in improving the life and health of lakhs of people in Mumbai. Donate what you can. And be a part of the change that ensures all Mumbaikars have reliable access to the most basic resource they need to live- water.
