25-year-old Venkatesh in a critical state after being hit by a truck

25-year-old Venkatesh was rushed to the hospital in a critical state when a truck driver accidentally ran over him earlier this month. The accident caused serious injuries to his leg and pelvis, and he was in the ICU for 18 days before he could even move again. He has had four surgeries so far which have gradually improved his condition. Venkatesh is now out of the ICU but has a long road of recovery ahead of him. He still needs one more surgery and further hospital care to be able to walk again.

His family hadn’t heard from him in two days and were worried about his whereabouts

Venkatesh was travelling from Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, to Bangalore on work, transporting goods in a truck. When the truck came to a sudden halt, the driver asked Venkatesh to check the wheel. While he was trying to move the rock that was blocking the truck, the driver accidentally reversed the vehicle and ran over Venkatesh, nearly crushing him to death. His eldest brother, Swami, and the rest of his family remained clueless about his accident for two whole days.

Venkatesh and his mother

“I got a phone call from someone two days after my brother met with the accident telling me he was in a critical condition in the hospital. I was shocked. Ever since our father passed away 16 years ago, I have taken care of my two younger brothers and sister. It was very difficult for me to think that I might lose my brother. Our mother was devastated by the news. She doesn’t eat or talk much anymore because of the stress.”

Venkatesh was quickly rushed to the hospital by the driver, and the doctors advised immediate surgery. He has been in immense pain ever since the accident and has had four surgeries to salvage his leg and pelvis.Venkatesh comes from a family of humble means

Venkatesh is a daily wage worker who cleans trucks for a living. He had hoped to build a better life for himself in the coming years and even wanted to get married soon. However, all his dreams have come to an unexpected halt now.

“He was very dedicated and hardworking. He was only just starting out in life. I will do as much as I can to save my brother, but our financial condition is holding me back. I earn Rs.10,000 a month with which I support the five people in my family. We need 11 lakhs for his treatment. I don’t have that kind of money, and neither does anyone else in my family.”

Swami has already paid Rs. 30,000 for Venkatesh’s treatment so far. He has no other form support and is struggling to arrange for more money now.

“Now that he's out of the ICU, the doctors have said that with surgery and medication, my brother will be able to walk soon. My greatest fear is that we’ll be forced to stop treatment if I can’t find a way to arrange for funds.”
