Story

Every child can and must play - irrespective of their gender, economy, or their (Dis)abilities!

Our special athletes, students with disabilities love to play just like other children. But they are often denied participation. Other (mainstream) children often do not include them in their play and sometimes the children also gets ill-treated. There are NO opportunities for children with disabilities to play and learn the skills of the game.

The 3 specific problems that students with Disabilities face in India, which we refer as ‘Disability crisis’–
  • Lack of quality programs providing holistic development for people with disabilities (PwD)
  • No physical education leading to health problems
  • Denial of participation due to social stigma and misconceptions towards PwD
A combination of all these challenges for 26.8 million people with disabilities results in:

As a result, there is a huge skill gap among students with disabilities which leads them to becoming dependent. It has also been observed that People with Disabilities suffer health problems due to lack of physical activities and this in turn adds to their financial burden.

WHY SPORTS!!

We understand that Sports is a great tool for development. The 4 buckets of benefits that Sports provides for our special athletes:

  • Physical and Motor skill Development
  • Social Skills and Life Skills
  • Physically Active and Health Benefits
  • Vocational Opportunities
Study by Dasra showed that 60% of persons with disability found employment post their participation in the sports program due to increased confidence and social skills

OUR WAY

UMOYA Sports provides holistic development to People with Disabilities through ‘Joy of Sports’ by developing equal sports opportunities and equipping them with skills to lead an enriching life.

Our flagship program, Joy of Play, is a progressive year-long during-school sports program curated for students with Intellectual Disabilities and Special Needs. At Umoya, we believe that sports benefits all equally and we use sports as a tool for development and create an environment of inclusion inside schools through our 'Buddy System'

We have collaborated with FIFA U17 World Cup India 2017 to host the first ever Inclusive Football Festival; Delhi Dynamos FC is our Technical Partners! Our special athletes deserve the best!

We aim to build an 'Inclusive Sports Culture' in India and create equal sports opportunities for children and adults with disabilities.

YOUR SUPPORT

Currently in the academic year 2017-18, we are working with 3 NGO special schools with close to 250 students with disabilities.

In the coming year 2018-19, we aim to expand to 5 more schools and bring the Joy of Play to 1000 children with special needs, and we need your love and support!

Your funds will be a lifeline to how we strengthen and expand our projects on the ground. They will be used for paying salaries to our team, adding much needed resources - sports equipment in the schools we will work in, for covering operational costs and for building a solid research bank that enables us to devise better learning solutions for our students & teachers.

Your support will help us build:

And you will get an opportunity to be the 'Team Manager' for these special teams! Be a part of our training sessions, give Hi-Fives to our athletes and mentor them.
