CALL FOR ACTION

By now, you've seen the gut-wrenching pictures of migrant workers walking away from cities to their homes.   You can imagine what must be going through their minds to take that approach. All of us know that Bengaluru has lakhs of migrant population.

Lakhs work in the construction industry. As daily wage laborers. They build our city.  Day and night. Rain or shine. From metro to your mega apartment, they sweat it out.
We also have a huge number of people in the 'informal' 'unorganized' sector. Rag pickers, coolies, microenterprise owners that make a living selling panipuri to roasted peanuts. Transgender community. Sex workers. Auto drivers, Cobblers, pushcart vendors. Most of them do not have proper housing, running water, sanitation.  Some of them have no access to the kitchen and rely on roadside eateries.

What happens to them during a lockdown? Even if they have money, access is limited.

"WithBengaluru" is a citizen collective that is trying to address this situation. By connecting various volunteer organizations, NGOs, individuals that have already been working in our slums, with the needy and with those that can provide rations and those that can transport and donors, we hope to set up a supply chain that can support the most needy in a timely manner.

WithBengaluru is also collaborating with Government agencies to create food security, leverage Indira canteens, use the PDS system, ensuring prices are in check, etc; multiple efforts are needed as the scale of the problem is quite large.
This is an earnest appeal to whoever reading this, to make a contribution.
You know that many of our fellow citizens just do not have the privilege of working from home and paychecks coming into bank accounts.  WithBengaluru is an attempt to support them.

As a collective, we are trying to identify folks that need help using hyper-local community organizations, estimate needs, procure supplies,  raise funds, use technology for better planning and execution.

Three things you can do right now:

1. Make a  contribution here. No amount is too small.  Together, we can make a difference. https://milaap.org/fundraisers/support-with-bengaluru#

2. Tell your friends and encourage them to make a contribution

3. If you know of any group of individuals that need help, tell us. WhatsApp/SMS to 98455 37269 (contact, location, count)

When a few individuals started discussing in late March, what can be done to help those that suddenly lost income and finding it hard to survive, they could not have imagined this effort will last so long, raise so much funds, attract so many volunteer hours and reach 20,000 plus families all across Bengaluru.

Necessity is the mother of invention, they say. Necessity is the reason we stuck around, as we found more and more communities in need, our resolve to raise funds and collaborate with other efforts and with government agencies strengthened.  In the second phase of our work, things were better streamlined, for example, different groups focused on different geographic areas of Bengaluru, saving time and reaching more people.

As of 2nd May 2020, the WithBengaluru citizen initiative, with Hasiru Dala as the nodal agency for procurement, packing and distriubtion, successfully completed 22,451 deliveries of dry ration kits, big and small. Besides this, we also funded many other groups, where the numbers are small and the requirement was urgent, by directly transferring cash to the grocery stores with volunteers ensuring the supplies reach the recipients locally.

Thanks to additional funding by Azim Premji Philanthropic Initiatives (APPI) we are also able to deliver special care kits for children and women, specila protein kits for those in areas identified with malnutrition.

We sincerely thank all our donors on our crowdfunding site (milaap.org), Wipro Foundation, Harish and Bina Shah Foundation, APPI for their generous support.

We could not have done any of this work without the support of St. Joseph's College - they opened up their auditorium that became storage and packing factory, took great care of us with food and tea. We are happy that the Chief Minister acknowledged the role of St. Joseph's in the relief efforts.

Words cannot convey our appreciation to everyone at Hasiru Dala, that ran this operation, professionally and with passion, working long hours and all the volunteers, that showed up to help with the work of creating 22,451 ration kits with rice, dal, oil, chilli power, soaps and masks and even books for children!

Thank You!    ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು

ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು! Thank You!

Last Sunday, a call for funds went out to help support migrant workers in Bengaluru.

As of today, 8 days later, 307 beautiful people responded, and contributed Rs 16.8 lakhs; we are able to deliver 4000+ ration kits all across Bengaluru. There were many issues initially, from procurement to traffic jams (yes!), to transport and delivery but our passionate and experienced ground operations team Hasirudala is able to overcome many hurdles and now delivering 1000+ ration kits of per day. Many volunteers work behind the scenes almost 24*7 to process the requests, check and recheck, and prioritize.

We still have a long way to go, and will continue to learn and do our best; we are collaborating with other groups and with the Government of Karnataka (Labour Department is planning to deliver 58,000 kits for migrant workers). Estimates say we have nearly 5 lakh migrant workers in our city, so a lot more needs to be done by everyone.

But now is a good time to express heartfelt appreciation to all the donors from all of us volunteers at WithBengaluru ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನೊಂದಿಗೆ

Our team managed to deliver 1542 dry ration kits across the city. Quite literally!

It is only possible because of diligent operations planning and execution on the ground by Team Hasiru Dala!

We still have so many thousands of requests to process. We are closely coordinating with other efforts to avoid duplication.

Every day.  requests are pouring in, especially from migrants. This city has grown on the back of workers' labor. Those sheltering under tin sheds and blue tarpaulins need not just rations, even water and cooking fuel are huge issues. We are looking to see how best to help them.

Thanks to some of you spreading the word - we have been able to raise some CSR funds too. More updates on this coming.

However, the need is greater than ever. Please do continue to spread the word and help us reach more people!
