Paralyzed 12-year-old needs help to battle seizures

"It is almost 6 years since my daughter was paralysed completely; she has lost her memory too. She no longer recognizes us. One day, she ran a high fever and I took her to a local hospital. She had medicines but her condition only continued to worsen. She was experiencing drastic weight loss, weakness in limbs, her eyelids got very dark and her face became so pale. Suddenly she got a violent seizure and she was paralyzed completely. She was not able to talk after that. All these years I have been running to hospital after hospital, finally, doctors gave me a hope to cure her but I don't have money to do that." - Jayanthi, Mother of 12-year-old Varsha.

Varsha's rare neurological disorder has left her paralyzed completely and she lost her memory too

12-year-old Varsha has lost her precious childhood days to a dreadful disease that had made her bedridden for almost 6 years now. She is diagnosed with encephalitis sequelae, a neurological disorder involving damage to the central nervous system that results in cognitive, sensory, or motor deficits that may also manifest as emotional instability and seizures in the most severe cases.

"My wife and I have never been anywhere else, our day starts and ends with the hospital. Whatever we earn we spend for her treatment. We even tried Ayurveda, but everything was in vain. She used to get seizures 2-3 times a day. We bought her all the medicines that doctors prescribed and seizures were in control. Last month she got it back so violently and we rushed her to hospital. She was in a coma for 8 days and then got pneumonia. She is on ventilator support now and I have not lost my hope. I know my daughter will recognize us one day and talk to us, she will also live a normal life. I 'm desperately trying all possible ways to save her." - Purushotam, Father.

Varsha can recover from violent seizures and pneumonia if the treatment is continued

Varsha is in ICU now and she needs PICU treatment for 10 more days. Despite all the odds, her parents Purshotam and Jayanthi were always determined to provide treatment to their daughter and save her at any cost. Even few of his family members have told that to hope for her recovery is a wild goose chase. In fact, doctors are surprised at the willpower of these poor parents. After years of battle, now Varsha can slowly recover with the PICU treatment and physiotherapy.

Varsha before the diagnosis of the terrible disorder
"We are alone in this cold PICU room together, I wanted nothing but to be at home, to see my daughter growing normally like any other children. She just looks into our eyes and she loses her consciousness. She has not spoken a word all these years. She has not responded to us. But I sit next to her all the time, I sometimes feel desperate to cry, but I'm physically and emotionally exhausted. I can't even muster the strength to talk. I feel I have failed her; I should have known that something is wrong sooner. I had no reasons to believe that the simple fever meant anything serious. I'm willing to do anything to give her a new life." - Jayanthi.

Purushotam earns money by ironing clothes and he earns around Rs 200 per day. With this meager money, he managed to take her to different hospitals and tried all the medicines. His relatives and friends and few of his customers have helped him. He had lost count on the money he borrowed. He has been spending literally everything for her treatment. Besides this, he has to take care of his 3-year-old daughter Mahima and his elderly mother too.

"Even my mother who is 65-years-now is helping me with my work. She couldn't bear to see our struggle. I'm grateful to everyone who has helped me so far for my daughter's treatment. But now for the first time I feel that I'm losing it. Doctor says she is recovering, she needs to continue the treatment but I have nothing left with me. Treatment costs Rs 15,000 per day. I struggled all thee years just to see a smile in her face, she deserves a life. Losing her would equal to our death." - Purushotam.
