It is a very sad reality when underprivileged menstruators in India have to choose between safe and hygienic menstrual products or a square meal for their own families.

Disposable pads are the most dominant menstrual product in India and the most problematic- its 90% plastic, has chemicals in it that can cause cancer and its disposal requires expensive bio incinerators to be set up, which release a multitude of toxic gases in the atmosphere. Furthermore, if disposed off haphazardly, this menstrual waste becomes a breeding ground for pathogens and affects the people, animals in its environment and the sanitation workers who often have to segregate such waste by hand.

At the Red Padding Project, we aim to change this reality. We are a new youth run organisation aimed at menstrual equity and promoting sustainable menstrual practices among India's underprivileged menstruators. We especially focus on those communities of menstruators that are ignored- such as those on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, those having disabilities etc.

Through this fundraiser, we want to be able to procure biodegradable sanitary pads and cloth pads made by rural women in India and distribute them among underprivileged menstruators in Delhi- particularly those having disabilities and refugee communities. This will not only ensure that underprivileged menstruators have access to hygienic and sustainable menstrual products, but will also provide a stable source of income for women in the pandemic who have lost their jobs.
