    Taqdees

    from Hyderabad, Telangana

“Taqdees is just 2-years-old and she is slowly learning to recognise the things around her. She loves balloons and jumps at the sight of them. I find it so hard to imagine that very soon the tumor in her left eye might take away her eyesight and even a sight of a bright red balloon would not excite her. As I look at my daughter’s face all that I hope for is that I never fail her and get her the treatment she needs so badly.” - Ghufran Ullah, father.

The parents had thought that their daughter has a simple eye infection but it turned out to be something far more dangerous

Little Taqdees has been diagnosed with retinoblastoma in her left eye. It is an eye cancer that begins in the retina — the sensitive lining on the inside of our eye. It mostly affects young children. The doctors have told Ghufran that the only way his daughter can get any better is through three cycles of Intra-Arterial Chemotherapy. This means that the chemotherapy drugs would be directly injected into the artery in her eye. This kind of process directly works on the tumor without causing any further damage to healthy issues.

“She used to rub her eyes a lot and it turned red very soon. We noticed swelling and a small white patch in her eyes and thought it was an eye infection. But after we took her to the doctor last year August, we were told that this is a case of eye cancer. We had never heard of this disease in our life. The first thought that came to our mind was ‘will she lose her eyesight?’ We knew we had to do everything in our hand to save her from that terrible fate.”

Ghufran struggles to calm his little daughter as she misses her mother lying on the hospital bed

Ghufran’s wife, Ghazala has recently given birth to their son and is now staying at her parent’s home in Ranchi. Little Taqdees misses her mother a lot. Ghazala is not well after her delivery and needs to rest. But Taqdees is too small to understand all this. All she wants is to hear her mother’s soothing voice as she tosses and turns in the bed trying to fall asleep in her pain.

“The chemotherapy takes a toll on her little body. She starts vomiting and the pain hardly lets her sleep at night. For almost 2-3 days we can’t feed her anything. She keeps asking for her mother and nothing I do calms her down. I can’t describe the helplessness I feel when I see her going through so much agony.”

A primary school teacher, Ghufran struggles to arrange for his daughter’s treatment

Ghufran is a primary school teacher in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He is the sole earning member of his family and has been taking care of his old, diabetic mother single-handedly.

“Since Taqdees has been diagnosed with this disease, I haven’t kept a count of the money that has flown out of our hands. All that I have been worrying about was getting my daughter better. But now the doctors have said that only a stronger chemotherapy treatment can reduce the tumor in Taqdees’s eye. I have already spent so much and now this treatment will require about 4 lakhs which I am in no condition to arrange. I will never be able to forgive myself if I fail to get her treated and she loses her eyesight.”
