We are Sumi and Rumi Mahato, sisters from the small town of Chandil in Jharkhand. In April, our family faced a devastating tragedy: we lost our beloved mother in a road accident, and our father sustained serious injuries. Our mother’s income was crucial for our daily needs, and with our father still on bed rest for another two months, his limited income cannot support our family.
Rumi is a single mother to an 8-year-old and a skilled baker trained at a renowned bakery in Delhi. Despite her talent, she is currently unemployed due to the lack of employment opportunities in our hometown. I, Sumi, am working as a consultant at Tata Steel Foundation, but my contract ends on June 30th, 2024.
