Roots for the future - Reforesting the Himalayas

Since the beginning of December, the entire region of the Kullu district suffers from an uncountable number of intentional forest fires. On the 21st of December 2023, in the Tirthan valley, a fire was started at the bottom of the valley. Within a couple of minutes, the fire reached the top of the mountain and burned everything, including our plantation site near the village Nadahar where we planted more than 2000 trees in 2021.

So, instead of planting trees at our new site near Chipni village, we have decided to focus on prevention of forest fires and ecological restoration with the help of the local community.

The logic is very simple : it is much more efficient to save square kilometers of forest than planting trees on 2 hectares of land.
We have been very successfull in addressing the issue of forest fires in 2018, so, we know we can do it !
The land in Chipni where we were supposed to plant trees will be used to experiment a method of assisted ecological restoration with the local villagers. This would help us restoring the burned forests at a later stage.

Where?

This is implemented in the Tirthan valley of the Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, the intervention area includes all the villages between Jalori pass and Bathad.

Why do we do this?

Transforming barren landscapes and regenerating forests holds immense potential to benefit the Earth's health and well-being. Restoring barren areas into lush forests contributes significantly to combating climate change by sequestering atmospheric carbon dioxide.
Forests act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing greenhouse gases and reducing their environmental impact. Moreover, re-establishing forest ecosystems enhances biodiversity, providing habitats for countless plant and animal species.
Forests also help regulate water cycles, preventing soil erosion and maintaining groundwater levels. These green spaces offer numerous ecosystem services, such as purifying air, providing livelihood opportunities, and promoting overall ecological balance. Restoring forests promotes environmental sustainability and ensures a healthier planet for future generations.

Objectives

Our main objective is to protect and restore the forest ecosystems and wildlife habitats, aiming to restore ecological balance in the area. This restoration effort also contributes to preserving groundwater levels, preventing soil erosion, and creating a haven for wild animals.
Additionally, our program ensures that the local villagers' needs are met in a natural and sustainable manner, thereby reducing their reliance on the illegal exploitation of natural resources within the Great Himalayan National Park.

Why are we good at doing this?

Our project enjoys a distinct advantage in its implementation due to the strong bond of trust we have established with the local community. This trust has been fostered by our commitment to addressing both immediate and long-term benefits for the community members.
By prioritizing the needs and concerns of the locals, we have earned their confidence and support by focusing not just on short-term gains but also on sustainable advantages that will positively impact lives in the long run.
This collaborative approach has allowed us to build meaningful relationships, ensuring that our project aligns with the aspirations and well-being of the community. Through mutual understanding and shared goals, we have established a solid foundation for the successful execution of the project.
