My name is Sonia Surin. I am a student of Bachelor of Business Administration - Bachelor of Law (BBA-LLB) 4th Semester in Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (Central University), Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
I was born in a small poor family of Jharkhand in Gumla district and Suruva Pahan Toli village. My father's name is S Surin Munda. He is a small farmer who works as a daily wage laborer in the village to meet household expenses. I belong to the tribal Munda community. Most of the people in the village send their daughters to work in other's homes in big cities so that they can help with household expenses. My parents also sent me to Delhi to do household chores in others' homes so that I could help with my household expenses. My studies were dropped in 6th standard itself.
I was introduced to the members of my tribe and village who were working and living in Delhi after I came to Delhi. Anita is a person of my tribe in my village. Her sister brought me to Delhi. Anita told me that I was very young, and no one would let me do domestic work. She told me that I should look after her 6-year-old child and complete my further studies. When she tried convincing my parents for further studies, my parents refused. My father refused by saying that I am a girl and there is no use of studying further when I have to go to others' houses to work.
I decided not to listen to my parents and continue my studies.
Anita got me admitted in Delhi's Sarvodaya Vidyalaya for further studies. I used to go to school in the morning after doing housework and after coming from school, I used to watch the child and I used to be on my own after the child fell asleep. In this way I completed my studies till 8th.
After 8th class, Anita could not support my studied due to her financial situation. She then sent me home.
Neelima used to run a small hotel in Munirka of Delhi, and she is also from my village. So, I came to Delhi with her when I decided to continue my studies. To continue my 9th class, I used to go to school during the day and work in their hotel during the night. I also took tuition classes for children in the evening. By this, I used to fulfil my basic needs. In this way, I completed my studies till 12th.
I had decided that I must do LLB and work for the benefit of girls, to be the voice of poor women who cannot raise their voice against the evil happening with them. I wrote the entrance exam for BBA-LLB in Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University which and was selected for the programme.
I had taken admission in the university based on scholarship under the scheme of Jharkhand Government e-Kalyan for studies.
I had applied for 1st year scholarship 2020-21 under e-Kalyan scheme on Jharkhand government’s portal, but it was not verified from the college. Since the scholarship was not verified, I found through telephone conversation with the clerk Mr. Awadhesh Yadav sir (department of law) that they were not aware of any other state scholarship. No information was found even after asking about online verification.
I had applied for 2 year-scholarship in 2021-22 but this scholarship was also rejected. Although it was approved by DA Officer after checking the scholarship status, it showed that the scholarship was not received, and on contacting the DWO office Gumla, it was found that Baba Sahib Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) did not complete its paperwork, due to which the students of Jharkhand state did not get scholarship.
At the time when I took admission in the college, a letter was given to me that if the scholarship is not received, then I will be responsible for it and I will have to deposit the college fees from my pocket. Due to this reason, the department is pressurizing me that I should deposit my fees as soon as possible, and if I do not deposit my college fees soon, the department has been given a notice to expel me from college and to not allow me to continue my next semester.
Since childhood, my aim is to help the backward sections of the community by becoming a lawyer. The people of this social level are not aware about the laws, about their rights and cannot get justice for themselves by paying expensive fees of court and lawyer. I must work for them.
I am unable to pay the required fees to continue my law studies. Due fees for two years are not deposited which is 2,40,000. 1-year tuition fee is 1,20,000. Including this semester, I require to pay 3,00,000. This is a very difficult time for me. I need your help currently. Please help me by donating funds and guide me to obtain scholarship so that I can complete my BBA-LLB education.
