Story

Snehgram is the first residential school in Maharashtra, where Vinaya and Mahesh Nimbalkar run schools and hostels. The couple has been doing social work in Korfale village in Solapur district since 2007 without any staff and any government grants.
They have taken in children sexually abused on the streets, children of suicide victims, severely punished children, prostitutes, orphans, and migrant children in Snehgram. Before coming here, the children were begging, stealing, picking up trash, and getting drunk at the roadside.
Vinaya Nimbalkar started social work at the age of 19. She was denied a government job as a teacher and decided to work for underprivileged children. It so happened that some families from the nomadic community of Barshi were living there. There was an incident where Vinaya and Mahesh had gone to Jamgaon village on a two-wheeler for some work. After crossing a distance of only 5 km from the city, they saw a boy crying on the side of the road. Asked in confidence, he was still not ready to say anything. They took him to a nearby hotel for dinner. He was hungry but could not eat. At that moment, they thought something serious had happened. He finally finished his meal, and he felt good. Putting his hand to his head, he wiped away the tears, and he told the whole truth. Sadly they learned that he was sexually abused in the neighborhood. He didn’t have parents, and his grandmother was blind. At that moment, Vinaya imagined her son's face in front of her. She remembered her baby in utero when she and Mahesh were surviving on nothing but biscuits and water.  In reality, however, the boy's pain was terrible. To make the life of such deprived children bearable, the seeds of sociality were borne out of that profound emotion. From that experience, Vinaya and Mahesh started a nomadic school in the slums.
Following that project, they established Green Signal School, Srujan Shala, Sakav School, Tottochan School, and Snehgram Vidyalaya. To date, they have supported more than 1340 children.

Challenge:
Today there is a growing trend from large rural areas to big cities. Due to increased migration, urbanization, and industrialization, the problem of homeless, destitute, orphaned / street children is profound.
Most parents live by the flyover, by the roadside. This leads to many problems such as drug addiction, child abduction, sexual abuse, and begging. Sometimes widows and divorced women remarry after the death of a domestic worker. There are cases of women running away with strangers, leaving homeless and needy children on the streets resulting in unwanted pregnancies of girls who have been sexually abused by lust. These orphans and street children are left without care and support. These orphan children are involved in rag picking, pickpocketing, begging, and anti-social, criminal activities.  These orphans and needy children were without food, education, and shelter. Living on the streets could lead to the criminalization of children, and sexual exploitation could hamper their social health.

Snehgram Democratic School:
In Snehgram, children elect the government in a democratic way through elections.Snehgram is a democratic school of deprived children in a democratic country.  Founded in 2014, The Democratic School in Korfale Tehsil- Barshi District- Solapur, Maharashtra (India) We provide a unique alternative to traditional education models by offering children a self-directed approach to their learning. Students at our school, many of whom have slipped through the cracks of today’s controlled test-driven school system, flourish in a nurturing environment that allows them the freedom to chart their course of learning while fostering emotional growth and interpersonal skills.
The children approve the monthly expenditure budget in the children's meeting. At The Snehgram Democratic School, students learn the traditional academic subjects and valuable lessons about responsibility, problem-solving, social justice, and, most importantly, how to relate to each other. We have always emphasized students’ emotional well-being, fostering loving, caring relationships, and developing a community of engaged learners. Our focus on community building encourages students to follow their dreams, contribute positively to society, and become voices for change.
To create good and responsible citizens from Snehgram, children's activities include Gram Panchayat, Election, Children's Parliament, Children's Court, Children's Gram Sabha, Field trip, Petrol Pump Library, Plastic and Tobacco-Free School, Pani Bachat Bank, One Day Social Work for Children, Vriksha Mazha Sakha, etc.
The children ofSnehgram planted and survivedmorethan1600 trees on the deserted orchard.Every year, the children of Snehgram make ponds for wildlife in summer.
Why We are Different..?
We run a residential school without Government funds.
Snehgram is the first residential school in Maharashtra that is run only by the couple.
Child-controlled democratic schools run by children.
It has the potential & impact full in mainstreaming underprivileged children. Their basic needs are met, and they will get a new life through gaining knowledge, vocational skills, and life skills through a Democratic School.

They will inspire by philanthropy & show humanity towards the community; we aim to help children become good citizens of India. When the child grows up, he will help the community.

Snehgram Democratic School needs your help.
The daily expense at Snehgram is for the food, medical care, shelter, education for 340 children.  Currently, the number of children is increasing, and new staff has to be hired. For this, at least Rs. 15000 monthly honorarium has to be paid to the employee. Corona and lockdown have made it difficult to raise funds. Due to the lockdown, many donors cannot make donations despite their wishes.
At present, Snehgram's hostel is under construction. You can contribute Rs. 1260 / - per Sq. Foot. You can also help with bricks, cement, crushed sand, steel, windows, doors, tiles, rubble, motors, light materials, and useful construction materials. Therefore, the memory of your loved ones will be cherished in Snehgram.
Many lives depend on the successful operation of Snehgram, and the support of people will ensure that Vinayamai continues her inspiring work to provide hope and love to the 340 children at Snehgram.
