UK Nationals Jean & Bob Harrison founded The Asswin Project in 2005 to provide support and medical help to ailing, abandoned & abused equines (horses, donkeys and mules). Today, more than 200 animals reside in the shelter-sanctuary, along with two rescue vans running across Delhi NCR daily. Asswin’s rescue vans have also driven to many remote locations of Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh when an equine was reported to be in dire state in those places. The organization and the founders also feed and care for hundreds of street dogs in a daily basis.
They are a truly inspirational couple, now in their late seventies, and living alone in India, far away from their home and family. Despite limited amenities, Jean and Bob have made a remarkable organization which not only helps animals directly, but also provides awareness on best practices for equine welfare.
The charity has always struggled for funds and has only a shoestring budget mainly comprising of the pensions of these lovely people. In order to ensure staff salaries are met in time, the couple end up sacrificing their already austere lifestyle.
The monthly expenses are about Rs. 3.5 lakhs amounting to about Rs. 42 lakhs per year. Jean & Bob’s pension funds go towards the organization and despite that there is a monthly shortfall of about Rs. 2 to 3 lakhs. This results in a lot of stress for the organization which can be avoided if we all come together and support them.
This very lean team of Jean & Bob, supported by the limited shelter staff, need all our support. Volunteers, donors, individuals all need to come together to help Asswin Project’s shelter by providing a cushion of funds for the full year’s successful operation.
