26-year-old Shiv Sagar never thought he would be lying in the hospital bed fighting for his life at such a young age. He was at a stage in his life where he was ready to take up the responsibility of looking after his mother, who worked hard as a single parent to raise him.

Shiv Sagar suffers from Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a type of blood cancer and he struggling to afford his cure.



AML affects the blood cells and bone marrow. It is a highly progressive cancer as the myeloid cells interfere with the production of normal white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. In Shiv’s case, there is no option but to undergo rigorous chemotherapy followed by a bone marrow transplant or else he won’t be able to make it. But with no income of his own and his mother being a poor daily labourer, there is no way they can afford the required treatment.

This family is not new to tragedy

Shiv's mother was the sole breadwinner after his father passed away 10 years ago. She did odd jobs to keep the house running and made sure Shiv has a good education. However, when she heard of Shiv’s ailment, in hurry to arrange the funds required for her son, she met with an unfortunate accident. Her leg was badly crushed and had to be amputated. She hasn't been able to work ever since.

The family has been barely getting through with their daily expenses. With routine blood transfusions, they are now under debt. They don't have enough to feed themselves, let alone seek treatment for Shiv's cancer.    

Only a bone marrow transplant can save him

Shiv was a very kind person, and would often help any sick person from his village get good treatment in the city. It was in one of those visits that he discovered he had cancer. He took a boy from his village who had mouth cancer for his treatment when he suddenly fainted. The diagnosis of his ailment left him devasted and his mother’s accident that followed, just crushed his spirits.

He is getting weaker by the day and he can’t even get up from the bed without help. His cancer has already blurred his vision and without an urgent bone marrow transplant, this young man won’t be able to make it.
