To protect the ones that protect us: Donating surgical masks to frontline Covid-19 workers

It was the beginning of March and chaos had started over a new disease that had entered the country- Covid-19. As an organisation, we wanted to just protect our teams against the virus so we started taking various measures like holding a session on Covid to inform teams, re-enforcing good hygiene practices though we were already practicing those since we are part of the hygiene industry. Suddenly, we started getting calls from many people asking us to produce masks as Corona virus was taking a foothold nationwide.

Demand for masks is high but the supply is limited. Government of India has calculated that India will require 27 million N95 respirators and 15 million PPEs in next two months for frontline workers. Frontline health workers and caregivers have a lack of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect themselves from getting infected.

Doctors, nurses, ayaahs, wardboys, sanitation workers, people distributing food and policemen are at the forefront of this fight against Covid. By coming in contact with a large number of people daily, they are the most vulnerable to get infected.

This is an unprecedented pandemic that none of us have never encountered before. Help us in supporting the people who protect us. We, at Saral Designs, are committing to donate 1.5 Lakh masks to the policemen and government hospital workers. These are high-quality 3-ply surgical masks and are UV sterilized.

Since each person needs 2 masks a day, we will be supporting 10,000 personnel for 1 crucial week.

What is the role of Saral Designs here and how can you help?

As a country, we have never planned for needing millions of PPE at the same time. At Saral, we have re-engineered our sanitary napkin machine to manufacture 3ply surgical masks with facility or production unit support from Mahindra Group. We are able to produce upto 30,000 masks per day and plan to produce 7.5 Lac in a month. These masks use tested material and are UV treated before shipping to kill any residual germs. One of our very first beneficiaries are the policemen stationed at Turbhe police station, Medicity, Kharghar and DY Patil hospital in Navi Mumbai.

One of our beneficiaries of the donation is also going to be Govt Taluka HeadQuarters Hospital in Cherthala, Kerala. This hospital holds a special place in the Indian history for the fight against covid as it was the very first hospital to take in the suspected Covid-19 case which later turned out to be positive.

100% proceeds from the fundraising are committed to production and supply of the surgical masks.
