In the small town of Davanagere, Karnataka, a story of unwavering strength emerged in the form of a little girl named Vinutha. At just 5 years, she embarked on a journey that would test her tiny body. A diagnosis of Neuroblastoma, a daunting cancer that strikes even the strongest, became a reality that her family had to confront.

With a monthly income of Rs 7000  barely covering their basic needs Vinutha's parents Sivakumar and Rupa, made a trip to SS Hospital in Davanagere to discover a heart-wrenching truth –Vinutha had Cancer. The darkness of this revelation led them to Dr. Ravi at Narayana Health Hospital in Bangalore, where their fight for Vinutha's life truly began. Under the care of Dr. Sunil Bhat, a guardian of hope, Vinutha's journey into the world of hospitals and treatments commenced.  A treatment plan encompassing chemotherapy, surgery, a stem cell transplant (BMT), and radiation was set in place. July 28, 2022, marked the beginning of chemotherapy.

How does a family in an unknown large city, facing expensive medical  treatment and no local support survive?

They happened to meet Padma a social worker from  CanKids, who took them under her wings to guide them through this maze of emotional and financial care. In the depths of their worry, she offered counsel, sharing vital knowledge about hygiene, infection control, and life during chemotherapy.

Within the CanKids KidsCan’s Home Away from Home (HAH) program, Vinutha's family found shelter at Salil Niwas,  a haven of care, which became their sanctuary for 9 long months. Amidst the challenges, they found moments of celebration, shared experiences, and unity with other families facing similar trials. Shelter, nutrition, medical care, counseling,  gifts, education, and a sense of community blossomed within these walls. The weight of financial burdens and fear lifted slightly as Padma provided guidance and emotional support on navigating the journey through government schemes, finding well wishers as well as CanKids support programs.
December 24, 2022, was a day of triumph – the last cycle of chemotherapy was completed. The surgery that followed marked a significant milestone in Vinutha's journey, as did the BMT on February 2, 2023. The road ahead was winding, but they walked it together. As of now,  Vinutha continues her journey, undergoing radiation with courage in her heart.

Today her safe haven, is what requires your assistance. Located in Varthur Hobli Bangalore, Salil Nivas has  provided solace and support to families in their most challenging times. While the premises have been donated by a well wisher, we need to raise an amount of INR 15 lakhs for the year to keep operations running, including food, electricity, sanitation, housekeeping, transport, salaries of staff, tutors and counsellors.

Apart from  shelter, nutrition, counseling, education,  Salil Nivas partners with renowned medical institutions like NH Bangalore, St. John's Hospital, Rainbow Children's Hospital,  to ensure that  its residents receive top-notch medical attention in their times of need.  In the past year, Salil Nivas has been privileged to serve as a home away from home for 75 beneficiaries and the count is already at 51 this year and rising.

For 9 months during her treatment, the Home Away from Home was Vinutha’s safe place where she could recover from the treatment, stay in a clean hygienic place with her family, play with other children in similar circumstances, focus on her nutrition & food, work on her education, and so much more… Save Salil Niwas, Donate now…ensure children like Vinutha have a safe and clean space to recover to fight this dreadful disease.
