At Surya Foundation, we are committed to empowering rural India through education, creativity, and values. For over 29 years, we have been dedicated to shaping the lives of children in underprivileged communities. With an extensive network of 240+ Surya Sanskar Kendras in more than 10 states, we provide children with safe spaces for intellectual growth, moral development, and experiential learning.
Our Surya Sanskar Kendras are more than just learning centers—they are platforms for transformation. These evening centers operate daily two-hour sessions, offering a nurturing environment for children to explore their potential through interactive activities, character-building exercises, and collaborative learning. Our work has touched the lives of over 2 lakh children, cultivating good habits, uncovering hidden talents, and preparing them to contribute positively to their communities.

What Work Do You Do and How Does It Impact Society?
We address the critical lack of educational resources in rural areas by creating opportunities for children to access quality learning materials and cultivate a lifelong love for reading. Libraries have become a cornerstone of our efforts, enabling children to enhance their creativity, critical thinking, and knowledge through storytelling, art, and reading activities.
Through our past campaigns with the support of Pratham Books and Donate a Book platform, we were able to set up libraries in Haryana villages and witnessed transformative results as libraries were instrumental in instilling good habits of reading, communicating, confidence, curiosity, and imagination among hundreds of children, empowering them to dream big and work toward a better future.

Our New Goal
By establishing libraries in 108 villages across seven states—Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi and Andhra Pradesh—we aim to create a ripple effect of positive change that will empower communities and shape the leaders of tomorrow.

How Will the Books Be Utilised?
We plan to set up 108 libraries across seven states—Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi and Andhra Pradesh that will serve as gateways to knowledge and creativity. These libraries will build the character of students and nurture their personality. The libraries-in-classroom will not only be limited to reading, rather different activities will also be undertaken with the aim to propel the student’s imagination, creativity and critical thinking skills.
1. Encourage Creativity:
- Books with illustrations will inspire children to draw, paint, and recreate story scenes.
- Role plays and skits based on the stories will build confidence and teamwork skills.
- Story-sharing circles will help children express their ideas and opinions, improving their communication and critical thinking skills.
- They will learn to narrate stories or compose poems, fostering literary talent.
- Students will be encouraged to provide feedback on the books they read, helping them engage critically with content and develop analytical skills.
4. Storytelling and Engagement:
- Mentors will lead interactive storytelling sessions using toys and objects to bring stories to life.
- They will organize art and narration contests, motivating children to participate and shine.
Why This Matters
Books are powerful tools that ignite imagination, broaden horizons, and open pathways to opportunities. Yet, in many rural areas, children grow up without access to quality educational resources. By setting up these libraries, we are able to bridge the resource gap by providing the children with books with enriching content that would help them to nurture their creativity skills. Also, we will help in promoting literacy and learning among rural kids as the rural areas lag in different domains due to inadequate access to learning resources. We can enable them to read and develop critical skills that will help them prepare them for future challenges. The good habit of reading not just only targets small kids rather involves the entire community irrespective of gender and age, leading to a positive social change through the culture of reading.
