I am Kanmani R (officially/deadname: Rajagopalan R). I am a transgender woman and lawyer based out of Delhi-NCR. I am trying to raise 80000 rupees for a trans woman friend who now has no option but to go for sex work now. Her mental and physical health has taken a bad turn after her transition because of lack of healthcare and financial support. I am trying to keep her anonymous because of issues with her family. I have known her for several years now.
The money that I am raising would be used for her medical care and sustenance.
This is her message which I am sharing:
"I am a 30 year old transwoman, who lives independently. I do not have a family to depend on and I mostly run my livelihood by doing sex work. The pandemic has been extremely difficult to sustain and the means of existence has been reduced to almost borrowing and begging. I have shifted two houses because of being unable to pay my rents and I have gone through phases of homelessness throughout my life. My mental health has been hit very bad with sex work. Sex work has been traumatising, reminding me of my childhood abuses and I have not been able to take up this work regularly for my survival either. I am not educated or qualified to do any other work at the moment, though I occasionally do get employed in certain job engagements. My unemployment, homelessness, and poverty has pushed me to extremes with regard to my mental health. My physical health also keep deteriorating with post effects of my Sex Reassignment Surgery. I cannot afford to go to a doctor or buy medicines. My entire look for food and money is on a day to day basis. I request you to kindly take my condition into consideration and help a fellow sister to survive. I have no other means or resources to depend on, apart from the help that you might provide and my friends. Kindly donate, so that I can survive through these tough times."
