Jaunpur development block of Uttarakhand is a socially and economically backward area. Garkhet a small marketplace of Jaunpur development block is central to more than 25 villages.
Most of these villages are living below poverty line and don’t even have the very basic facilities.Education, unemployment, poor road connectivity, lack of Medical facilities and distant educational institutions are some of the problems of this small area which have led to massive migration from the village.
Common people are leaving their roots in search of better employment opportunities and educational facilities for their children.
It is a heresy that Mountains are not capable of holding its water and youth for long which is becoming true for the youth of these villages. We have taken a small initiative to mitigate this problem to some extent by providing the children with good and modern educational facilities at village level by opening an English medium school “S.F. Memorial school” in 2016.
To some extent, we have succeeded in stopping the migration. After the opening of this school, 15 to 20 families have sent their wards to our school ,handing over the responsibility of shaping their future. This is just a beginning and we will continue our efforts to solve this problem of migration and providing quality education.
We started our journey with just a total of 08 students in 2016 and currently we have reached a total of 100. Local people have seen improvement and changes in their wards and this has built their firm belief and confidence upon us.
To create awareness about modern education, we are providing free education to every second child from a family and girl child. As villagers are very poor and can’t afford dress and books. So we provide them with free school dress and books. A very important step taken by us is providing school bus at a very minimal price for the student of distant areas so that it doesn’t become a burden for their parents. All the financial burden of school facilities is taken care of by us .As most of the villagers out here are poverty struck and are not economically sound enough to pay the fee on time which frequently creates a problem in smooth management of the school. We are not able to make timely payment to teachers recruited from cities. Lack of furniture for students. Urgent need of bus services for the student coming from far away villages. Need of basic amenities for students such as – sports equipment, musical instruments, cultural etc. Apart from Infrastructural requirements which we lag. We are currently facing a shortage in Teaching staff and need to hire 4 B. Ed certified teachers, a B. Ed certified principal, Certification up to class 10th, and A Bus. Currently, the vehicle we have is not in very good condition and need too much maintenance and repair for its proper functioning. In the hilly terrain, a vehicle’s proper functioning is a necessity for safe journeys. With the responsibility of school student we can’t rely on our current vehicle for a long time. With the proper vehicles, we will be able to save the time of children as well as provide them safe trips.
We are duty bound to increase the level of literacy in rural India but lack of basic facilities in the village is a big challenge for us.
It has become a very difficult task to impart education to 100 children without any financial aid. From the last 3 years, we are running school with our own resources and fees received from students. We have to pay 45,000 ( about 634 $ ) every month from our own to run the school.
OUR NEEDS
1. Need to Hire Four English Speaking B. Ed Certified and two NTT Teachers
At present school is running till the class 8th with a staff of 11 among which 8 are teachers, 1 clerk, and 1 cleaning lady. It has become extremely difficult for us to hire English speaking, B.Ed. certified teachers because they demand high wages, and we have not yet received any financial help due to which we are not able to pay more than 7,000 Rs per month. Yet, we are trying our best to find a way to fulfill the government requirements. Currently, we have two B.Ed. certified teachers and two D. El. Ed. teacher. To meet the government requirement we need to hire four additional teachers with B.Ed. or D. El. Ed. certification and two teachers with NTT. We also Need to double the salary offered by us to teachers from 7,000 Rs to 15,000 Rs per month as teachers with higher qualification are not willing to work at lower salaries.
Currently, our total budget of teachers wages and staff is 45,000 per month. With the addition of four B.Ed. teachers and Two NTT teacher, a principal, and an increase in current B. Ed teacher wages, plus paying ourselves a wage, we would require an additional amount making it 1,20,000 per month and total annual amount is 14,40,000 .
2. Buying Bus
Currently, the vehicle we have is not in very good condition and need too much maintenance and repair for its proper functioning. In the hilly terrain, a vehicle’s proper functioning is a necessity for safe journeys. With the responsibility of school student we can’t rely on our current vehicle for a long time.
Our vehicle ( Mahindra Maxx ) has only 9 + D seats and transports roughly 46 students to school. Without the vehicle, proper functioning of school will be a very difficult task as a many of student come from far away areas. In order to bring children to school from these far away places. We have to make many trips in various direction and children also have to start their day very early.
With the proper vehicles, we will be able to save the time of children as well as provide them safe trips.
The cost of a new Tempo Travaller with 26+D seats, will cost roughly 14,00,000 fit for the mountain terrain. With one large bus we can reduce the number of trips to pick up students, while transporting them safely and comfortably. A robust bus is required to run the numerous errands necessary for running our school on the rough mountain roads which are not possible with the present vehicle( a jeep) which we have, which is in constant need of repairs. Therefore, our immediate needs are 14,00,000 for a new bus and for maintenance it will cost 12000 per month .
So the annually total expenses will reach to Rs 30,00,000 to running school properly.
Parents of these children are financially very weak and don’t have enough money to pay the fees of their wards. To run the school properly we need strong finance and more resources but at present school, management doesn’t have enough resources and enough funds because of which we are facing problems in running the school properly. But with the new session, there will be an increase in the number of children for which we have to increase our resources also.
As our school is growing and we hope it will grow in future also, but with its growth, the cost of running the institution will also increase.
