People For Animals (PFA) is the largest animal welfare organization in India. PFA has several lakh members, 200+ units and 36 hospitals. Every few years we build new hospitals.Since government has no infrastructure at all for street animals, rescues and the animals of poor people, we fill the gap. During the pandemic of COVID-19 the only animal organization that worked 24x7 HRS was PEOPLE FOR ANIMALS (PFA). Our Units across India took it upon themselves to look after and feed street animals and treat them. PFA took the initiative in sending free food all over India donated by Pedigree, individuals, food raised through crowd funding and this initiative goes on till today. Whatever PFA raised through the Donations, Sponsorships and CSR initiative we build new hospitals, upgrade the existing ones, get new ambulances and equipment for many hospitals.
On our radar at the moment are five hospitals:
1. People For Animals Guwahati - It is half built already and is the only hospital/shelter in the entire state of Assam.
2. People For Animals Sikkim - We will start building as we have the land. We run the only animal ambulance in Sikkim.
3. People For Animals Sadhrana, Gurgaon - This is built and running for 15 years. It needs upgradation. It is the only hospital/shelter in Haryana.
4. KAWF - It will be helping Kashmir Animal Welfare Foundation build the first animal hospital/shelter in Kashmir.
5. PFA flagship hospital: extreme renovation
People for Animals flagship hospital is the first animal shelter in India . Built on 4 acres in what was then outside Delhi but is now in the middle of Delhi, it originally catered to 200 animals. But within a year, people realized this was the only shelter in the entire North India and thousands of people and animals started coming. We ran an ambulance service and often 20-30 pickups were done in one day. The animals brought in were given the best care even though most of them were in the last stage of life: accident hit, diseased, distemper and parvo ridden, rabid. The local government was quick to take advantage. The police brought in cattle that they confiscated from smuggled trucks. The Jains bought cows from slaughterhouses and threw them in the hospital. As time went on the state government closed down 79 veterinary clinics in the city and told people to use our hospital. Soon the shelter was accommodating 6000 animals and we were putting up buildings at random. One night the MCD threw in 250 ducks. We sat up the whole night digging a pond for them. At any given time we have camels, 800 cows/buffaloes, pigs, monkeys, dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens, birds of every kind. During COVID we were the only animal facility to stay open 24 hours and we rescued hundreds of animals. We are sterilizing dogs for the city and have single-handedly done thousands of street animals, causing a severe decline in the population, healthy animals on the street and a steep drop
if not disappearance in rabies We are open 24/7 and we run a round-the-clock animal ambulance at nominal cost and helpline. Its busy OPD treats over 200+ animals a day providing medical, diagnostic, surgical services. It is part of the city municipality's ABC (Animal Birth Control) programme wherein it sterilises and vaccinates street dogs. It works closely with the police to take in and care for animals confiscated in cruelty cases such as overloading and neglectful ownership. It organises a thrice weekly adoption stall at a shopping mall through which it has placed over 2000 Indian puppies in loving homes.
This state of affairs carried on for 40 years and the hospital which ran for 24 hours and has a staff of 130 people – with no government grants or CSR – came close to collapse. Our distemper wing had hundreds of dogs, our ABC wing was bringing in 20-30 animals a day, our OPD had 300 people standing in line, our rescue vehicles were working nonstop for 70 pickups a day . People came at odd hours at night and left their own dogs tied to our gate. We had over a hundred people coming to feed the cattle every day, we had tourist dropping in at random. Our staff was tired , our doctors were leaving due to overwork, our facilities were stretched beyond breaking point. So we decided to raze it to the ground and start rebuilding to accommodate 7000 animals (instead of 200) happily and easily. We started in August last year and work has been slow because of the rains, Diwali, the second Covid but we are picking up and by December, if all goes well and we get the funding we need, we should start functioning in the new buildings. But we have not stopped working. 200-300 people are still coming in the OPD, we still rescue the very urgent cases, we still work at night, we are still the only facility that take in distemper and parvo cases. We are still the only animal shelter in Delhi and now with your support, we will be the largest in the world with a capacity for more than 10,000 animals.
Some of our activities and initiatives are as follows:
1. We make hospitals/shelters for animals and rescue hundreds of animals every day. Our hospitals are used by municipalities and governments, poor and rich people. Most of our service is free for street animals or very low priced for owned animals. Our rescue services are free and just a phone call away.
2. We approach the courts to change the way animals are treated. At any given time, we have at least 30-40 cases in court and, thankfully, we win all of them!
3. We sensitize and train the police, judges, municipalities on animal law. Thanks to PFA we now have law courses on animal welfare in every law college. Bar Council of India has also introduced Animal Law in their syllabus. We work against big and small cruelty all over India.
4. We lobby intensively with governments to change laws that are harmful for animals and people.
5. We work with individuals who look after animals and save them from harassment.
6. We help create teaching material on animal related issues across India.
We are where we are because of the assistance we have received from people like you. It is extremely sad, that even though India has millions of animals, the government doesn’t do much for them. As a result, the responsibility of looking after, rescuing and helping these animal’s rests solely on Non – Governmental organizations such as ours.
PFA shall be most grateful for your support towards our ongoing initiatives, all of which are focused on helping animals across India.
