What We Intend to Do:
We would like to build a model waste management center in Sambalpur, Odisha that
We would like to solve two major issues in the area through our work
a) Help communities in the urban areas of Sambalpur manage their waste and
b) Provide employment opportunity to the people in the village.
What We Need:
We would require the following items to construct the model waste management center
How We Want to Do It:
We would like to incorporate the various principles of waste management in our center’s working model so that people could understand the A to Z of waste management in one place.
Waste Management Hierarchy - Different principles of waste management
1. Rethink/ Refuse - Through awareness sessions at our facility, we want more people to rethink about current waste management practices and adopt waste reduction rather than the current practice of generating waste & sending it for recycling.
2. Reduce/Reuse - The sustainability shop at our facility would showcase the alternative eco-friendly and reusable options available for people who would like to move to a sustainable lifestyle.
Through our ATM, we would encourage more people to donate reusable items such as clothes, toys, books which would be given to those in need.
Items which are in good condition during our sorting process would kept separately and either sold to customers or donated to people in need after proper cleaning.
3. Repair – We would engage tailors, electricians, cobblers and other artisans from the local community to convert items such as used clothes, shoes/chappals, bags, electronic items, wooden waste into reusable items in our repair café.
4. Repurpose/ Upcycle – We would work with upcycling experts to create a upcycling studio that would be involved in the repurposing of waste into reusable items.
5. Replenish – The wet waste collected from the households and other bulk waste generating communities would be composted into manure at our facility and the manure would be sold or donated to the farmers at a subsidized rate.
A feeding area would be put up outside the facility wherein fresh vegetable waste would be fed to cows so that a part of wet waste would be taken care of then and there, rather than waiting for 30-40 days to get converted into manure through natural composting.
6. Recycle – We would have a mini local recycling plant within the facility that would be based on the concept of precious plastic, a global non voluntary group involved in the promotion of localized plastics recycling.
There is a category of plastics known as Ghudia (a local terminology used for thick HDPE/ PP plastics in black colour) that is sold for Rs. 1-2 per kg at the wholesale market while similar plastic types in non-black colour are sold at a price of Rs. 20-22 per Kg. Due to the lesser cost, all these good quality black plastic doesn’t have a market and end up in landfills. We want to collect and recycle these black plastic into useful items through our mini recycling plant. Also We would like to create an alternate economy for such waste by involving various stakeholders such as the rag pickers, kabadiwallahs, waste collection shops (kaiyilaan kadai) and wholesalers for the collection of such plastic.

7. Garbage Bank - We would also set up a garbage bank in the facility, wherein the local villagers and students could deposit their waste and in return buy toys, books, recycled products (produced in our recycling facility) and other eco-friendly products from our sustainability shop.
What We are Doing Right Now:
Through our social enterprise - Safaigaadi, we collect dry recyclables and wet waste from households and bulk waste generating communities such as apartments, schools, and colleges in Odisha. We are currently working with 20+ apartments in Odisha catering to roughly 6000 households, processing approx. 20 tonnes of waste every month. We have conducted awareness programs on waste management at 60 apartments/ schools over the last 2 years and collected around 400 tonnes of dry waste for recycling, out of which a majority are low value recyclable waste such as plastic carry bags, multi layered packets, thin packaging boxes, glass bottles, clothes that are normally ignored by the local kabadiwallahs.
What We Want from You:
The dry waste sorting and subsequent processing is a labour intensive process that requires a greater amount of physical effort and cost. The dry waste is sorted into approx. 40 different sub types at our facility before being sent for reuse/ recycling and the workers who do the sorting undergo lot of hardships like physical contact with undesirable wastes such as napkins/diapers/food waste and injury due to sharp and broken objects. We would require your financial support to build a model waste management center that would be safe and comfortable for the workers and also would strive towards effective utilization of the generated waste.
What You could Expect in Return:
In case you support our initiative (don’t worry if you couldn’t support us financially, you’re moral support is good enough), We could give a detailed tour of our waste management center so that one could understand in depth on the various aspects of waste management. Also, we could give free awareness session on waste management to your community or school/ college of your choice and also provide further support/suggestions to lead a sustainable life style. With more financial support, our motivation levels would reach through the roof and we bet we could do greater things for the waste management sector than what we are doing right now (keep more waste out of landfills).

- A closed shed made of aluminium sheets.
- Cement tanks measuring 10ft*4ft*3ft (l*b*h) for wet waste composting.
- Different Composting set ups for training purpose such as Khambha, pipe composter, leaf composter, bokashi kit, Blue colour drums with holes.
- Precious Plastic set up consisting of a shredder, melting cum extruder machines with mold for the recycling plant.
- A raised platform (similar to a conveyer) and stools for the workers to sit and sort the recyclable/Dry waste.
