#BoxofHealth: Reaching the last mile with Health and Hygiene Kits
In the rural tribal areas of Chhattisgarh, there are numerous families that go about their modest lives, until they face a health crisis that needs immediate medical attention.
They seem to be doing the right things, as per their means and circumstances. But a lot of times, their children fall gravely ill. Even if they have a reliable healthcare facility close to their home- children fall victim to diarrhea- a deadly disease that can be fatal for young children.
But why are these children battling against this dreaded disease at such a young age?
On delving further, it can be found that the reason why they often become susceptible to such illnesses is due to the lack of basic hygiene practices being followed at home. And why does this happen? The parents of these hapless children do not have the means to afford basic hygiene products which can otherwise keep their children safe.
India is the second-most populous country in the world with more than half of the population living in rural areas. We all are learning from the COVID-19 global pandemic that the simple act of cleaning hands can save lives and reduce illnesses by preventing the spread of infectious diseases. However, thousands of people do not have the access to these basic hygiene products like soap to protect themselves from various illnesses.

Who are we?
USAID’s flagship health systems strengthening project NISHTHA, implemented by Jhpiego in partnership with Unilever envisages expanding the reach and impact of healthy hygiene behaviors in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Nagaland for improved health and well-being. NISHTHA with its strong presence and existing networks in Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness centers and community platforms like Panchayats/SHGs/VHSNCs is committed to improving knowledge, attitude, and practices on healthy hygiene behaviors among the targeted communities.
What do we aim to do?
NISHTHA in partnership with the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN), a unique funders’ network that is committed to building a vibrant and high impact social investment community across Asia, is rolling out an innovative campaign called Box of Health where we aim to curate health boxes consisting of soap, sanitizer, face mask, and sanitary pad, and distribute these boxes to tribal families in two districts of Chhattisgarh – Jashpur, and Surguja. These relatively ‘basic’ items can help the tribal communities in Chhattisgarh practice healthy hygiene behaviors and keep themselves safe. We aim to collect 200 such Boxes of Health which will directly impact 200 households in these two districts of Chhattisgarh
This endeavor will be made possible by the generosity of philanthropic individuals, organizations, and other entities. We encourage all contributors to join our campaign and ensure that no one is left behind in our effort of improving healthy hygiene practices among the targeted communities. Together we can make basic hygiene items accessible and available for tribal communities in Chhattisgarh, taking one step closer to our goal of helping India become healthier!
