Urgent: She is suffering from second and third-degree burns and needs immediate help

One of the most painful experiences a human body can ever come in contact with is the sensation of being burned. Four months ago Monika experienced this brutal pain throughout her legs when all she had wanted to do was prepare some warm food for her family. While Monika was cooking dinner for her family, the LPG gas cylinder caught on fire in the kitchen. The fire was a grave one, the flames engulfing everything in its wake, including Monika's legs.

"We had returned home after visiting a fair in our village. We were happy with the little things we had in our life. As usual, my wife Monika left for the kitchen to cook for us and the next thing I saw was my wife writhing and screaming in pain. Her legs looked deformed and charred by the flames of the gas cylinder that exploded in our kitchen."  - Gopal, husband.

He is struggling to care for his child, and get his wife treated

Gopal is a daily wage laborer who earns 150 rupees a day and sometimes this wage is also not constant, causing financial insecurity in the home that has already been struggling to keep itself afloat through the turmoil. He lives in a dilapidated house with his wife Monika and their 1-year-old son. Between earning for the family, the regular doctor visitations for his wife, and taking care of the household needs, Gopal has been stretched thin at every end.

He has spent a total of INR 1.30 Lakhs on Monika's doctor visitations, medications, and regular bandaging of her burns. It is an amount that he wouldn't be able to incur if not for taking on overwhelming debts that he is working even harder to pay each day.

"I work the day trying to make an earning with which I have to make sure both my baby and my wife are fed and taken care of. I can forget about my sufferings but it is my wife's pain that eats at me. I feel so guilty for our poor circumstances, it makes me realize just how helpless poverty can make one feel." - Gopal, tearfully.

Tears never stop flowing from her eyes, the pain feels never-ending for this family

Due to the fire, 25-year-old Monika is suffering from extensive deep burns on her limbs. She is suffering from second and third-degree burns and the doctor has stated that she needs immediate surgery to heal from these injuries. The surgery is estimated to cost around INR 12 Lakhs, an amount which is not only impossible but an unimaginable burden for Gopal to bear. He has gone to overwhelming lengths to help his wife, yet he alone can't help her get this surgery. He needs help and he needs it as soon as possible.

"I feel like I have been skinned alive, there is no end to how much pain I am in, and it is not because of my burned legs alone. It is downright brutal that I can't even go to the bathroom by myself, I can't even hold my baby for long. No one can ever understand how hurtful it is to be so dependent on such simple tasks when I used to be the one that my family depended on. I just want to be cured, to hold my baby and cook food for my family again. This pain weakens me each day." - Monika, tearfully.

This family is holding onto a thin thread of hope, you can help strengthen it

The family was once living a simple life, somehow managing to get by with their meagre earnings but now they feel like their world is ending. Gopal urges everyone who can help, to come forward and donate for Monika's surgery, it will not simply save her life but also has the power to change this family's quality of life for the better.

Just like Monika, there are many others who can receive a new lease on life if they get the treatment they need on time. This is where you can step in and contribute to Milaap’s Accident Emergency Response Fund, and be a beacon of light for those whose lives were turned upside-down by accidents.
