He Was Driving Back Home After Work When He Got In An Accident

I remember the call as if it happened yesterday. It was late at night, and all I could make out were panicked words about an accident. My younger brother had been driving home after work, taking a shortcut home that night—he’d always do that, trying to get back to his little boy as soon as he could. But something went wrong. A bright light blinded him, and he crashed into a divider.

He Suffered Spinal Cord Injuries Leaving Him Almost Paralyzed

He was rushed to a local hospital, but the injury was beyond their capacity to treat. The next morning, he was transferred to a hospital in Delhi, where I live. The doctors told me his C3 and C4 vertebrae were shattered, a critical spinal injury. Surgery was the only option. I sold everything, borrowed from friends, family, and took loans I can’t repay. The surgery was done, but his body was left in an almost paralyzed state. He couldn’t move his hands or legs. I have to do everything for him—feed him and even scratch his itches.

Even After His Wife Left He Never Let His Son Feel Lonely

Before the accident, my brother was everything to his son. After his wife left, he took on the role of both mother and father, determined that his child would never feel the absence. He’d wake up before dawn each day, packing school bags and preparing his meals. After work, he’d return to help with homework, and tuck his child into bed, never once complaining about the long hours or the weight of responsibility, even while caring for our handicapped mother in Rajasthan. His entire world revolved around ensuring his child felt loved, protected, and never alone.

His Son's Whole Life Changed, And He Slowly Lost His Smile

But now his son doesn’t smile anymore. He’s withdrawn, and the light in his eyes has dimmed since the accident. Though he’s now staying with me, and my daughters try their best to comfort him, I know it’s not the same. He doesn't go to school anymore, and has to attend online classes. Without his father, his friends or other's his age, he feels more lonely than ever. The bond he shared with his father was irreplaceable. No matter how much I try to fill the void, I can’t.

There Is Hope But We Don't Have The Means To Pay For It

The doctors say there’s hope for recovery, but it’s a long road ahead. My brother needs another surgery, along and constant supervision. The cost? 9.4 lakhs. My work as a tabla player barely brings in enough to support our family. I’ve done everything I can, but we’re running out of options. Every day feels heavier than the last. I do my best to keep his spirits up, but I can see it in his eyes—he’s losing hope.

You Stepped In And Helped This Family At The Right Time

This child was scared of losing his father—he’s all he has. Your support gave them the chance they desperately needed. You helped us bring a father back to his son. You showed them the power of giving. Harcharan and his family are immensely grateful for the love you have given them.

Accidents can happen anytime and they come without warning. The stark truth is that not everyone is as lucky as Harcharan - not everyone’s family is able to arrange enough funds in time for the extensive treatment that follows trauma cases. Patients linger in unbearable pain and suffering for many years, unable to get the medical care they deserve to recuperate properly. Trauma patients often hang between life and death, in a vegetative state, as a result.

This is where you can step in and contribute to Milaap’s Accident Emergency Response Fund, and be a beacon of light for those whose lives were turned upside-down by accidents.
