My name is Krutartha Rasal, I am a college student and am starting this fundraiser to help my 60 years old mother fight stage IV cancer. She was diagnosed with benign breast cancer 10 years ago, but with surgeries and appropriate interventions, we were able to fight against it.

Cancer therapy is much more than just chemo, there are so many overheads that our family could barely make our ends meet while we paid for the treatment, and were basically living paycheck to paycheck. We had to rely on our relatives to pay for it. But, it was all worth it as my mom was cancer-free after a year of treatment. My mom was healthy again, the doctors even stopped her hormone therapy after 7 years.

Exactly when we were hoping to finally pay back our friends and family, cancer returned, stronger and more severe than before.

In December 2020, she was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer which has severely affected her lungs, pelvis, and thorax. The doctors say that with the appropriate treatment we will be able to manage it, provided that it is administered at the earliest. She has already undergone 12 painful chemo sessions but we had to stop the treatment midway because she contracted COVID-19.

After being hospitalized for weeks, she recovered from the infection but it left her body battered and in no condition to tolerate traditional chemotherapy any longer. Her oncologists have now suggested we move on to an alternative treatment. It is an advanced form of traditional chemotherapy, where the anti-oncogenic chemicals are taken orally instead of being administered intravenously.

As this is a fairly new treatment it is quite expensive with a single cycle (21 days) costing ₹90000-1 lakh and will have to be continued for a lifetime. However, the manufacturing company i.e Pfizer provides a scheme to pay around 7.5-8 lakhs after registering for 9 months, and based on that they provide the further doses for free. As we had to stop the treatment at a crucial stage due to COVID-19, we’ve lost a considerable amount of time so starting oral chemotherapy immediately is the need of the hour.

My father is a retired 65-year-old man who himself recently recovered from getting a bypass but he is trying his best to provide. We’re under heavy debt after taking out multiple loans and borrowing from relatives who have given more than anyone would and we’re incredibly grateful for their support. But it has now become extremely difficult for our family to sustain, we’ve already exhausted all of our savings and so I am starting this fundraiser.

The funds will primarily be used for further treatment as well as to pay back bank loans and lenders so as to leave quicker options open in case of future emergencies. We are also looking into different treatments but as of now, oral chemo is the way forward. My mother is a wonderful, positive, and lively person. She’s determined to fight through this for her loved ones, especially for her children. It is my humble request to you all, please help my mother and our family to get her the required treatment and a chance at a healthy and happy life.
